As someone who studied languages and literature at University many years ago, i have never been a great loer of Poetry, although I do have a well-thumbed book of first world war poets. Reading this thread and what people say about their choices has opened my eyes a bit.

But just to lower the tone a bit:
There was a young lady from Bude
Who went for a swim in the lake.
A man in a punt
Stuck his pole in her ear
And said 2You can't swim here, it's private.

"Oh freddled gruntbuggly
thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee.
Groop I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes.
And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon, see if I don't!"

Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard to fetch her poor doggy a bone.

But when she bent over, the doggy took over and gave her a bone of his own.

Bloody hell this takes me back to when I was 13. Took me ages to learn that and show off in the play ground!

‘O World, thou choosest not’
By George Santayana (b. 1863)

O WORLD, thou choosest not the better part!
It is not wisdom to be only wise,
And on the inward vision close the eyes,
But it is wisdom to believe the heart.
Columbus found a world, and had no chart,
Save one that faith deciphered in the skies;
To trust the soul’s invincible surmise
Was all his science and his only art.
Our knowledge is a torch of smoky pine
That lights the pathway but one step ahead
Across a void of mystery and dread.
Bid, then, the tender light of faith to shine
By which alone the mortal heart is led
Unto the thinking of the thought divine.

Here I sit
Broken hearted
Paid my penny
And only farted

or

Here I sit
Happy and heartful
Got in free
And done a cartful

but

I want this at my funeral:

The man who was new at the zoo
Was put in charge of the gnu
The gnu knew he was new
And he knew the gnu knew
And he knew the gnu knew that he knew
