Albion signing Seb Pocognoli has backed Anthony Knockaert to help him hit form quickly – after turning from fan to team-mate of the dazzling Frenchman.
The Seagulls’ new left-back recruit from West Brom has a strong association with Standard Liege, the Belgian club where Knockaert starred before moving to the Amex.
Pocognoli told The Argus: “I know him because he played for Standard Liege. It’s a team I follow because I was born there, was in their academy and then played for them.
“I didn’t play with him but, as a fan of the club, I followed the team and he played with a friend of mine there. We have that in common, so I know he’s a good guy.
“I’m very happy to be playing with him. He’s been outstanding since he joined Brighton. He speaks French, so he can help me to adapt here.”
Albion return to Championship action after the international break against Brentford today, the first game since the closure of the transfer window.
Fans’ favourite Knockaert, who attracted a multi-million pound bid from Newcastle during the window, is guaranteed a hero’s welcome but Pocognoli may have to wait for a chance to impress the Amex faithful.
The 29-year-old, signed on loan for the rest of the season, is short of peak match fitness following a lack of meaningful minutes at West Brom where he fell out of favour under Tony Pulis.
Pocognoli said: “I had quite a good pre-season, played five games, but not with the first team, so it’s difficult to judge my fitness level.
“My mind is free and that will help me get back to my best level as quickly as possible.”
Albion are without the injured Liam Rosenior and banned Sam Baldock for the visit of the Bees.
