Playing into the hands of the NIMBY's

Picture the scene.

Here am I a NIMBY sitting in Falmer. I have been told by Brighton that they want to build a 45million pound stadium south of my village AND HAVE THE FUNDING AND FINANCIAL CLOUT TO DO IT

I pick up my local paper and see a begging letter from the Chairman of this club asking every adult who went to Cardiff to give them £100 each. Not for buying new players but to keep the club going.

Can you believe my luck as a NIMBY.

I can just see the letters page now.

" We told you they had no money"

"They lied to us by saying the club was on a secure footing"

" they told us even with the ITV digital situation they were solvent"

I am sorry but I am very very worried about this.

What chance any players ever coming here again?

we have been asked to pay £100 to the club ( as stated in threads here) to raise £2.5 million as there is a f***ing great hole in the finances and we are possibly f***ed unless we do it

No doubt they will try that, but the funding of the new stadium will be entirely separate from the funding of the club. You can get grants etc for a new stadium that you can't get for the day-to-day running of a football club, as so many other clubs have proved. You can say a few things about the club's appeal for money, but showing they can't fund a new stadium certainly isn't one of them.

As for "they lied to us by saying the club was on a secure footing", the whole point about Withdean is that it's too small and we're getting clobbered by renting it.

You are right of course, and those of us who know the details and keep abreast of all developments understand the difference between ticking over financially and funding a new stadium once permission is given. However, the vast majority of local joe public (who scan local papers or read no further than big headlines) will now think the story is about us going bust again. It is this conclusion that the NIMBY's can exploit regularly to their own ends and keep writing daft letters to the Argus letters page and the like. The overall impression now is that the Albion is in a shaky position I'm afraid. And even a certain amount of our fans would agree with that.

The clubs situation is desperate enough to warrant a plea for investment so (even though the Falmer finance and business plan is separate) the clubs overall image as a stable entity on the way back up has clearly taken a hit. Even though it is nothing to do with incompetence or mis-management the publics perception will largely be based on the big words, not the small print.

Dessie what you say is true - but since when has the truth mattered to our opponents? Also the question of the stadium being separately funded is almost irrelevant. What's the point (our opponets will say) of building a new stadium when the only possible users of it are about to go bust?

£2.5 million = £100 x 25,000
£2.5 million = £250 x 10,000

That is one TALL order :(

Going back to the oroginal point of the thread we are bound to see some letters in the argus from NIMBY's going on about how we can now afford a stadium, but the point is DK could never have envisaged the Falmer decision not having been made by now, as the budget would have assumed a positive decision in the summer.

Also the new PI has nothing to do with whether we can afford it but which is the best site, the extra £2m is to keep us going until the decision is made next year.

This also highlights the point if the decision had been no, the club would be in serious financial trouble.

Surely this would have nothing to do with the Inquiry anyway. The only thing to be looked at is whether there is a site more suitable than Falmer. The NIMBY's cannot use this as an argument, all it does is highlight furthur that we NEED a site for a new stadium and that site is FALMER not Withdean.
