Looking at the world cup there seems to be more players that hold "duel" passports that allow them to play for other countrys.

This seems a bit stupid to me, what does everyone else think?

France's starting 11 seems to be mainly made up of Africans, Germanys Swiss and Polish and Even England have a Cannuck!

But if a player is genuinely of split nationality, ie parents from different countries, who do you allow them to play for?

Thats fair enough but it seems to me certaqin countrys/players just take the piss!

I mean Alex in the japs side - he looks really oriental!

Well the rule is, I believe, that to qualify for a country you must have a relative from that country no further back than your great grandparent, or is it great great grandparent?? Either way, maybe they should just make it simply grandparent, ie two generations? If that was the case, I think the player in question would have a strong enough link to be able to play for "their" country. As it is, players are playing for countries because of a relative who lived 100+ years ago!

If you are given a passport of that country i believe you can play for that country as well.

'ove actually
You can play for any country, in which you are entitled a passport for.

I saw on football focus, that there was this guy who used to work on this carrabeanen island, so was entitled to have a passport, and ended up playing for them in WC qualification

Edit- and beaten by Kinks, to say it!

I think that to play for a country you should satisfy one of the following:

1. Were actually born there.
2. One of your parents was born there and you qualify for a passport for that particular country due to their nationality.
3. Were domiciled there as a child and thereby qualify for residency of that country and thus a passport.

I think that is fair enough, as for having grandparents from that country or being pursuaded to qualify by some other tenuous route, sorry, not good enough.

I've never understood why they get paid to play for their country. I'd do it for nothing if I were good enough.

absolutely

it ought to be a privilege
get paid by your club by all means, but your country?

you should be grateful to represent them

...so would I, all I would expect is for the FA to pay my expenses, flights/hotels/food etc. I would probably be earning a kings ransom from a Premiership club, playing for England would be just for fun, in fact I would almost be prepared to pay for the privelage.
