Players want BOB as Manager

Sounds as though the players all want Booker. So I guess that rules him out then. Never appoint a manager the players want. Thats what happened before with Hinsh and Wood. Players need someone with a bit of aura and fear about them. Otherwise they'll get comfortable and let standards slip.

I want Nigel Clough with Bob along side him. As his trusty number 2.

Players ALWAYS want an existing member of the coaching staff - they know they'll keep their jobs.

Bob is a star, and a big reason for our success over the past few years, but as Captain Sensible says we need someone to kick player's ass not be their friend.

Bob Booker could be groomed as the new Manager Liverpool-style and be a success,

thrown in at the deep end like Stuart Gray and be a failure.

So if we get an older Manager, maybe Bob Booker could make the grade sometime in the future?

Or do we take the chance now?

DK has always had the view of making Booker manager one day, ages ago he talked about "grooming him" for the job, why do you think that DK says to every new manager that the background staff must remain the same, not only to keep unity and make it a more "office type" enviroment but to groom them for the future.

If ANY new manager fails to achieve automatic promotion, their season will be written off as a disaster.

If Booker gets the job, there'll be calls for him to be sacked if next season is another year in the Second Division.

Is he CERTAIN he will deliver promotion? If not, he should stay in his present job - that's a far more secure career option.

I've said this before, but Booker's current relationship with the players will undermine his authority as a manager. They'll play for him short term because they like him, but long term he's a no-no. He's too valuable in his current job to risk losing him altogether if he were to fail as a manager.

I didn't know Stuart Ashby had ever managed anyone. Now that's an idea let's get Stuart to manage the club. He's an inspirational figure, loads of contacts, links with other clubs like Southend, brilliant photographer, travels all over the place, has an interesting collection of memorabilia and visits hundreds of Good Beer Guide pubs.

Never appoint the manager the players want. It never works. We've done it twice with dead Wood and Tinselwood and surprise, surpise, it ended in disaster. That's hopefully a lesson DK has learnt by now.

In my view Booker is a good number 2 but I doubt if he'll be a good manager in his own right.

I agree with Lord Bracknell, whoever comes in is going to be under pressure to take us up automatically post Coppell so we need a safe pair of hands and who's not going to change things too much.

Fact is Coppell's a hard act to follow.

Going against the grain, I don't think promotion is essential, nice as it would be. Give Booker the job on a trial basis at least until we get a decision on Falmer. We're hardly likely to get relegated and BB may just suprise a lot of people. I am not inspired by the names being bandied about anyway.

I still think this is the one that will work. Think of all the former managers he now has as contacts. He has the support of the payers, and more importantly he knows only too well the problems we have.

I can't believe it but if we do promote from within, I'm with FG on Wilkins. Some of the youth Team are scared shit of him, unlike many Midfielders in his playing days. Wilkins may not have got stuck in but his ability to pass and open a game up were top notch and his style of football aswell. I would Prefer Wilkins to Dowie or Kinnear.
