Guess if the only thing you had to look forward to was turning out for the cobblers each week it might be pretty demoralising but very strange nonetheless

Northern Ireland and Northampton Town striker James Quinn has quit football after his failure to break back into the international scene.
The 32-year-old won 50 caps and scored four goals for Northern Ireland since making his debut against Italy in 1997.

Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington had told former Blackpool player that he was still in his plans.

"I knew playing for Northampton wasn't good enough to earn me a place in the international team," said Quinn.

"Nigel phoned me when he took over and told me if I was playing regularly then there was still a role for me with Northern Ireland," he told the Belfast Telegraph.

"If I can't play for Northern Ireland then I would rather quit football and become a fan and cheer the lads on to qualification.

"I've played 50 times for my county and that fills me with pride."

Well I think the '4 goals in 50 games' part explains why he doesn't get a game.

I wonder where he lives? I need someone up front for my Sunday team.

Hmm. Northern Ireland will almost certainly have spannered it up in the next game or two.

So he's giving up his entire career to 'cheer the lads on' for two games to heroic failure. What's he going to do the other 363 days of the year when he's not being a Northern Ireland fan?

Conspiracy alert - my money's on shagging the chairman's daughter. This tale is a load of Cobblers.

Is he actualy saying he quitting ALL football,or just international??

I realise the article is worded that way,but it could possibly be a mistake and he isnt quitting club football.

According to the Northampton Web site they are in discussions with the player to terminate his contract.

Since he has been at Northampton he has managed just 1 goal in 22 games, hardly the stats to get picked for International football when you are a striker!

Particularly not when Northern Ireland are, for once, actually doing rather well.

In other words no club came in for him in the transfer window, or a club was too late, so by deciding to 'retire' from football effectivley terminating his contract with Northampton he then becomes a free agent and can move on to whoever is interested in him.
