CRAZY LOONEY TUNES lefty government wanna charge motorists £1.40 a mile to travel on a road to replace car tax! what about say the existing lower engine cars getting lower tax etc. CRAZY Blair gone mad again! Another fine mess like Iraq, bring on the next election and let the blues march into number ten!

Do you think they would be any better at solving the congestion problems of this country then?

Shows signs of a brave government. Not scared to impliment whats right for the country by being scared of loosing public support (and they've done plenty of that!)

Thats what they'll say anyway. Im not sure if its a good idea. Since it hasn't been announced Im sure their still refining the idea.

No party standing for elections is radical enough to solve congestion problems.

Until the teleport arrives, the best we can hope for is to ease the congestion. Let's all emigrate to Spain.

I repeat - do you think the Tories will do any better at solving congestion problems?

I think a few radical ideas will be needed to sort this one out. Interesting that Red Ken has had success with congestion charging in London despite the bleatings of Stephen Norris. Not bad for a loony leftie eh?

No WAY.
I saw The Fly the other night. You end up either turned inside-out, or you get all mixed up with something else.

Look at what happened to Prescott. Quite clearly he was eating a blancmange when he went through.

Red Ken is as back handed as the lefties are to be left empty handed when the blue steam roller crushes them at the next election and the country is blue again. of course will take the torries a while to vclean up the mess of the reds and yes even stevie wonder can see blair is a clown in a circus of government.

Mass transportation systems are not a solution. What is needed is an alternative to the car, i.e. an indiviually tailorable personal transport system that takes you where you want to go, when you want to. Either that or a reduction in the need to travel - home-working, internet-shopping, video conferencing.

It always works OK on Star Trek.

On NSC for over two decades...
Charging the motorist more won't solve the congestion problem, which is why we pay an exhorbitant amount of fuel tax. What might be useful is making public transport more attractive for people to use, which means providing convenient and regular services to where people want to go......

Great idea, the average motorist covers 12,000 miles a year which makes average road tax at £1.40 a mile £16,800.00.

I'll happily pay that

No, no no.
Its quite simple. What we need is more ROADS.

They should add car tax to petrol duty. Base it on the current rate and divide it by the average number of miles. That way the heaviest users pay the most and we can get rid of the costly tax disc system. They could also add third party insurance but I havent worked out how the insurance companies would benefit from that.

Works for car tax, can't see how it would work for insurance. The attraction of car tax replacement is its progressive nature, high mileage drivers of gas-guzzlers like me pay more, frugal users of eco-friendly minis pay less.

I do like the car tax system because it provides a regualted system of ensuring that the car ownership database is up-to-date. I would prefer a much lower car tax figure that covers just the cost of collection (plus enforcement), with the revenue raising element added to petrol.

I'm not sure how it would work for insurance but was thinking of the situation where uninsured drivers have accidents leaving the victims potless.

I like it though, let's do it
