Plans to create sunshine island

The floating resort would be sunny all year round
Plans to build a brand new, permanently sunny island off the coast of Sussex have been developed.
The holiday resort, named Pleasure Island, would be based two thirds of a mile off the coast of Brighton, between the city's two piers.

Architect Alan Phillips, from Alan Phillips Associates Ltd, said the artificial island would be filled with sunlight 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

A giant glass dome would cover the resort, which would house a conference centre, hotels, bars and restaurants.

An area of the development would also be set aside for low cost housing and flats.

I think a new island is fine and it will give Brighton a bit of breathing space

Alan Phillips, architect
The Brighton based architect behind the plans said he chose to create a floating resort as the city is becoming increasingly cramped.

Alan Phillips said: "It would give Brighton a global uniqueness, which will attract vast amounts of inward investment.

"After all Brighton is full up now and you cannot fit anything else in and everything we do as architects is about building here and here and here.

"I think a new island is fine and it will give Brighton a bit of breathing space."

Designs for the project are completed but the island has yet to achieve planning permission.

Mr Phillips will have to get approval from the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, as well as from the Queen, who has jurisdiction over the Channel.

The plans would then have to be approved by Brighton and Hove City Council.

Will it be built before Falmer?

The one in Dubai they refer to looks stunning in the artist's impressions.

The proposed Brighton one looks like a nuclear power station.

Any chance of a little space for a stadium on the island? Imagine the queues for the Park & Float after the games...

Meopham, Kent.
Wow, this idea could be adapted and suddenly we have a floating alternative to Falmer.

This will be one time we can appreciate the council not giving planning permission.

We can all be NIMBYs for a change.

The corner quietly rusting
Won't happen
1. The nimbys won't allow it
2. They will not get any Barge collision insurance.
3.They won't be able to get fire insurance for it.
