Not a good time to be a Bristol Rovers fan then. Before the credit crunch, they were crowing about how they were going to have a nice new stadium that would be much better than their neighbours.

Now it looks like they're stuck in their shit rugby stadium while City build a brand new one that could hold up to 42,000 and guarantees they could compete in the top flight. Shame really, as I much prefer Bristol Rovers.

Very underwhelmed.Thought it would have a nice pair of matching domes:wink:

Its not that simple for them. They are saying the only way to fund it is to sell the current Ashton Gate site to Sainsbury's, who plan to open a massive hyper market type thing there.
There's big local opposition to this, and as Sainsburys would want planning permission for the store before buying the land it could be a rocky road for City.
Also the access road to the new stadium site is on land controlled by North Somerset Council who have already refused planning consent on it.
As a local resident I thinks its a pity they want to move away from the streets where the majority of their support is from. But if they feel they need a bigger better stadium then so be it but even if it is City, I'd much rather have a football ground down the road than another bloody over sized shopping outlet.
Bristol City Council and the Evening Post are pissing their pants over the thought that Bristol may possibly host some World Cup matches and go on as if the decision for England to host is a done deal.
Friends who are involved in local arts and sports are finding it hard to get the Council to support anything unless it has some World Cup connection.
New football grounds eh ? Who'd of thought they'd stir up such emotion !!

Presumably the shitty end with the perspex roof is for the away fans. :)

Fairly sure I read somewhere that the design was based on Villa Park after Alex Ferguson had said that was the most atmospheric ground in the country.

i think Bristol City are thinking ahead with this design. If they go bust in a few years time it can more easily be turned into a Toy r Us , Comet etc . You had to start again with the goldstone...

Now I don't usually hijack an oppo's club forum, but thought I'd make a few comments regarding our new stadium (BCFC that is).
Spending a significant amount of my working life in West Sussex, I have become very familiar with the plight of Albion and particularly the Stadium issue over the last 10 or so years and how you all can't wait to get out of the Withdean. Your new stadium pictures look very nice may I add.
During Bristol City's consultation with it's supporters, the main comments made were how dull and atmosphere-free a lot of modern stadia we visited were, namely Ricoh, Riverside, Walkers, Madejski etc. Now the supporters have a big part to play obviously, but we wanted something on a more traditional - four sides, lower stand roofs, steeper terracing, close to the pitch etc. All helps to create a better atmosphere and maybe give the opposition a bit of a harder time. I think because it's not quite the usual design of a football stadium these days, it is generating interesting comments.
I only had the pleasure of visiting the Goldstone once - we were battling you for a play-off position I seem to remember in the old div 2. (90/91 I think). The atmosphere was cracking - and we beat you 1-0.
Let's hope you can get that back at Falmer when it's finished and it isn't lost in a bowl like so many others.

Good post. It's funny how people criticise any new stadium now just because it's "not Falmer". Your new ground may not look great from the outside but inside should be really good and won't have bland empty corners like Falmer

Exactly. The 2nd photo posted by Turkey looks great.

It's unique.

People have Falmer tinted specs - they conveniently ignore the fact that it's quite similar to Huddersfield/Bolton/Wigan etc, just slightly newer!

However, a big city like Bristol, you'd think they'd get something a little more iconic.

when you think about it, it is almost iconic in its pure straightlines, 90deg angles and pointy corners boxiness.
