From the Daily Telegraph:
The groundsman responsible for the pitch at the Manaus stadium which will host England’s clash with Italy on Saturday admitted that the playing surface was in “bad shape” and would not be much better when the game takes place.
England arrive in Manaus on Thursday and plan to send an official to inspect the surface, which looked dry, patchy and marked in pictures taken over the past 48 hours.
Carlos Botella, head groundsman for the Royal Verd company which is responsible for the turf at Manaus and six other World Cup stadiums, has conceded that the game on Saturday, which will take place in severe heat and humidity, will be played out on a desperately inadequate surface. He said his groundsmen were car*rying out emergency measures to try to improve the surface, and blamed the remote location of the host city for the problems.
“Frankly, Manaus is in bad shape,” Botella told the Associated Press. “We’ve started to implement an emergency plan to try to save the field and improve it as much as possible, but I don’t think it’ll be in good condition by the weekend.

Certainly don't remember that from Japan or Germany. Or for South Africa for that matter, where the main concern prior to the tournament was crime.

Probably an incident with a FIFA official and a brown envelope stuffed with $$$ somewhere along the line.

Because that is what the World Cup is all about. Taking football to the masses. Only 1 of the stadia built in SA is financially viable (FNB stadium in Soweto), the locals in Polokwane and Nelspruit are still waiting for the "FIFA legacy" to appear (decent housing, running water and all the other promises that were made) and the stadium in Cape Town may be demolished if some get their way.

oh dear......it has to be said that the building of the Manaus stadium is probably one of the daftest decisions ever......4.5 hour flight from rio and in the middle of the jungle.....it is unlikely to get much use after the cup......perhaps it was built way up there purely for England's first game by fifa in the hope it would derail our campaign....

i was going to raise this but you are obviously better qualified , i am sure the people of SA and Brazil would much rather have decent housing , schools and hospitals than dirty great , unused football stadiums on their doorsteps.........blatter , platini etc.........blinded by their own self importance.
