For those of us that can remember, which Sussex band of the 70's and 80's deserves the plaudits? :drink:

Piranhas with chart-topper "Tom Hark" (now played and sung at most footie grounds ... to celebrate a goal ... and at ours to hail Charlie Oatway) first featured in my collection on Brighton's own Attrix Records on Vaultage 78 (I think)

Lambrettas (Lewes's finest) with "Poison Ivy" and "Da-a-a-ance"..

Fat Boy and Levellers eat yer heart out.

Aah, embarassing teenage claims to fame...

Dick Adland (P's drummer) used to live in the next street to me in Lewes in the 70's and could be heard practising until the wee small hours.

I also used to know a couple of the Lambrettas and helped put up some posters, carry some of their gear in their early days.

Jez Bird of the Lambrettas also coined the classic ( and to us Lewes boys ego boosting ) statement that if you could get the 50 trendiest teens in Sussex on your side then pop stardom was yours to grab. :lolol:

'Beat Boys in the Jet Age' is one of my all-time favourite albums, Da-a-a-ance is one of my all-time favourite singles and Jez Bird is one of my all-time favourite songwriters. I've seen him playing in local pubs, sadly he won't do his own stuff but just plays covers, he says it what the punters want.

However I loved the Piranhas too, but in a different way. I'm afraid I can't separate them.

Sorry, my respect for bands that only had hits with cover tunes is limited, so that leaves Sussex with very little to boast about in music .

Totally agree. However Jez Bird did write 'Da-a-a-ance' which was a hit - although not as big a hit as their version of 'Poison Ivy'

Used to go and see the Piranhas every Sunday at the Alhambra on the seafront.
Always a fantastic evening.
The unreleased album they did for Attrix Records (the local label) was far better then the re-recorded one with 'Tom Hark' on it on Sire...and many of their best songs ('Paris Fashion' for instance) never got recorded at all. A great fun band. Boring Bob Grover is a permanent fixture at the greys these days..don't know where the others are.
We shouldn't let any other club 'grab' 'Tom Hark' ..it's a Brighton song by a Brighton band!!

Sunday nights down the Bucaneer, Nicky & the Dots, the Lil-lets, the Molestors, then the headline act the Piranhas. Those were the days!

"We all went down to the Esplanade, where the lager tastes like lemonade...."

Boring Bob Grover, top man!

Went to school in Lewes with Dick Adland from the Piranhas. His band name was Dick Slexia, or sometimes Dick-tate.
Not a lot of people know that!

Can't believe these clubs nicking our song.

"Palace sing, I don't know why,
'cos after the match, they're gonna die!"
