The whole debate over what exactly the Daily Mirror is guilty of is clouded to some extent by the fact that virtually everyone dislikes Piers Morgan as a man, and would like to see him get his come-uppance.

Let's deal with the mitigating circumstances first. Yes, it was brave to go with this story, when he and everyone else knew it would create a shitstorm of the highest order. Yes, we're all glad that if there were abuses they were exposed. It's always going to be dealt with, at least, under this level of scrutiny. And yes, we do need a free press, ours is miles better than most.

But the bottom line is that Morgan got it wrong. You do have to be brave and gamble as an editor occasionally, and this one has blown up in his face. The very strong visual image left by the front-page photos was phoney, and won't easily be dispelled. The Arabs out there won't spend hours reading the Media Guardian web site to correct the mistaken impression they have gone away with.

It was a big mistake, and is only partially compensated for by the fact that the underlying story was true. All of which means he shouldn't be hanged, but should resign.

Those pictures may be faked but you can bet your bottom dollar that atrocities are being committed behind closed doors by British troops - as used to happen at the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. This is slightly different though. If Beckham wants to blow his beans up some old slapper and it turns out to be false then so be it, I'm sure he will be adequately compensated in the courts.

If these false pictures cause a civil revolt in Iraq and soldiers lose their life's then this is much more serious. He should have given the pictures to the MOD and given them a week to prove their authenticity. If they couldn't, he could print them with his back covered. His Stupidity has probably cost him his job and put people at danger just a sell a few more copies of his greasy rag. Talk about a man with no shame.

On the other point that the accounts may be true but the pictures false, Surely it is innocent until proven guilty?

But I'm sorry - the Geneva Convention does NOT determine which side is behaving better although I too am in no doubt that British troops are mostly kept in check, unlike the rabble of Arabs who think hacking off the heads of innocent civilians is fair and reasonable in the name of war.

One more thing - it probably is easy to find where the blame lies for this chain of command breakdown, but if it's anyone too near the top it'll be whitewashed - the people at the top rarely get punished for their poor quality actions. That is why your bum chum, dubya, will never be impeached for taking his country into war on a premise that turns out to be a LIE.

Yep - totally agree, the implications of the publishing of these "pictures" is a byproduct I'm sure he didn't contemplate, or if he did then he is simply unpatriotic.... I was merely comenting on peoples anger that these photos have turned out to possibly be staged....
