Hopefully going with mates in Feb... what's the best upmarket hotel south

I have stayed at the Cape Panwa on the south coast a few years back - nice hotel but in a pretty quiet area.

I have stayed at the le meridian in Phuket three times.
Superb hotel with it's own private beach.
Located in an isolated bay but only a five minute cab ride to the chaos in Bangla road,
Best of both worlds.

We've looked at Pa Tong and Karon beach... any thoughts?

Patong is more lively than Karon beach.
