Petrolheads, please recommend me a car

I'm about to start a new job and my daily commute will drop from from 60 miles to under 5. Therefore I was thinking of downgrading my sensible, economical car (Skoda Fabia TDI) to something a bit cheaper but perhaps a little more exciting to drive.

Looking to spend a maximum of £3k on a car that wont cost too much to maintain. And preferably not too big since parking a bit tight.

Any recommendations?

Thanks for the suggestion. I has crossed my mind and I may well get one. However I don't think I could totally do without a car for things like shopping and days when the weather is awful, etc.

Redland, wouldn't disagree with you there as the owner of a Golf (an oil burner and not a petrol guzzler), but where is he going to get one that is legit for £3k or less?

How would i know?I'm pissed.
I've just bought a Toyota Camry 3.0V6 Sport.......Basically, it's a Lexus ES300, but badged as a Toyota as their flagship model, Rreg, leather, cruise, all the toys and under 3 grand. The most comfortable car i've ever driven and i've had plenty.
Does like a drop of fuel around town, but on a run where it can stretch it's legs, it's not too bad at all.
If you don't do a lot of miles then economy isn't an issue.
It's a lot of car for the money, and being a Toyota, bombproof.

An older Golf wouldn't be a bad bet, if you can find one that has been looked after (one careful, octogenarian, lady owner, etc), it is a car that holds its value reasonably well and even old ones look OK, if you can get one with a diesel engine it should be good for 250k miles.

An Alfa, very cheap cars and great to drive. make sure they have a service history and just keep up with the servicing schedules and oil changes and they should be problem free. No other car is more fun for the money imo.

One of these maybe?

I'd go for a J reg MkII GTi if I was looking for a new Golf. It was fully kitted out being the last in the run, finding one that hasn't been molested by a boy-racer may be an issue though.

Ford Puma, Cheap and really fun to drive. Look cool to.

:)

I was considering one of those before I bought my last car. Then I realised I wasn't a hairdresser! :safeway:

I'm a girl, not a hairdresser though. so maybe it the wrong choice for macho boys :D

Mines a Puma Black with a Miltek exhaust system and a powerflex suspension kit. Looks prety standard not chaved up, but goes really well. Think the next step is to put some red.dot 258mm 6 slot break disks and pads on it. But what do I know.. Oh someone needs a perm, Bugger you caught me out. :lolol:

I wouldn't bother for the money!!

and just for Mr Bad Ash - if I had a small commute and wanted something fun and quick I'd probably look as something like this...Cheap, tax free and shed loads of fun...

But like someone else mentioned re the Golfs, finding an unmolested Escort is getting very hard!! Most of them are now rallying (obviously) or pumping round town on highlifters with neon underlighting
