Just out of interest doing a piece in the Herald about the rises, looked back to June 1970 when my dear old Grandad went round numerous Esso station in Worthing with me in order to collect my Mexico World Cup Coins set.

A gallon of petrol back then was 6s 3d (33p) which on the Bank of England inflation calculator works at about £5.30, so has petrol actually gone up that much against the cost of living?

Yes.

6 shillings and thruppence would have been 31.5p, so a bit less than your £5.30.

£1.50 per litre is £6.84 per gallon

31.5p is £5.30 accounting for inflation, the rest is tax rises.
