Yep, I'm walking a tightrope at the moment, not sure if my earnings are going to nip into the higher rate this year. If they do, do I lose child benefit forever, or do I get it back if I'm under next year ?

I believe it's done on yearly earnings. If you were to change jobs and, say for arguments sake, earn £20,000 or £30,000 next year your child benefit would be back in payment.

With the price of diesel being so expensive I am somewhat suprised you rarely hear of people getting nicked for using Red Diesel in their cars. I feel sure that if I had an old car thats next stop was the scrap yard as opposed to reselling it I would be tempted. Incidentally what is the penalty fro such offense as I am told iot is very easy to spot.

I will be cross referencing all the people who bleat on this thread against those who have posted comments saying students should pay their own way.

And what has that got to do with the oil barons of the middle east holding the world to ransom.

I was replying to CKA's tongue-in-cheek post.

One tip to get around this is to drive less.

My neighbours regularly use their two cars to travel very short distances i.e. they are often out and back in 5 mins. Why they f**k don't they walk every now and then? Needless to say they are both not as fit as they should be. Lazy bar stewards.

I've seen it happen, but only because some bloke was nicking it from the company he worked for and selling it on. Some companies are authorised to use it for fleet vehicles in certain circumstances. We found a guy sneaking on to the premises of his employer at night and filling up these huge plastic containers with the stuff. He got nicked for theft from his employer, and then HMRC then went after him too for evasion of fuel duty.

I believe they went round his house and dip checked his car, his missus's car, and those of several mates whom he admitted selling to, and lo and behold, found red diesel in all of them.

Went to the states in July, when it was still 1.10/1.15 a lire here. After bit of maths and conversion etc, worked out at about 65p per litre. Cant get my head round that one. :glare:

What is th penalty for using Red Diesel. It is available at the little garage at Bolney for about 65p litre I am not saying people should do it. Apparently once used in a car or van it stains and cannot be removed

I'm not sure as it's not something the police really deal with.

It's HM Revenue & Customs who get involved. You could only use it in a diesel car anyway, which rules out the majority of cars, but yes, it is very easily detectable once it's been put in a tank, and I *think* they do roadside checks on occasion to try and pick up fuel duty evaders.

HMRC are very active in dipping cars in Northern Ireland, but that may be down more to the "laundering" industry up there...

Isn't there another 2.5% VAT to go on the price too?

I read a while back that this was because it's very easy (and even cheaper) to get hold of red diesel in the Republic, therefore drivers from the north regularly pop over the border to fill up their cars, and hope they don't get caught when they arrive back in the UK.

unleaded at 125p a litre so that when the VAT increase and fuel tax accelerator is added on will round it up nicely to 130p a litre.

this thread was quite timely, the telegraph has a the very subject. it tells us:

The average price for a litre of unleaded petrol on British forecourts is 123.26p. Of this, 57.19p is fuel tax, 18.36p is VAT, while the actual cost of the fuel is only 47.71p

the price of oil is today at $91 up from around $87, 5% increase. thats about 3p on the pre-tax cost of the fuel. but the pump price reflects prices of fuel a few months ago as thats when the oil was brought and started to be refined, in October prices were around $81 and where in below $80 for most the summer into September. there were a couple of sharp increases on the way up which will show in the pumps some weeks later.

with inflation running over target and fuel costs impacting on inflation, i wonder if they might make the decision to hold prices next April and not have the customary increase in duty.
