PC help required please

Right I needed to update my hard drive so I borrowed one from
work.(ok ok I half inched it).
The problem is when I boot up all I get is the normal black screen
saying Copyright Microsoft etc
then a command prompt C:\>
Does any one know the prompt or is it something the IT guy has put there to stop thieving gits like me?
Any suggestions? Thanks

Bang the hard drive on a hard surface a couple of times and try it again. It won't fix it, but it might teach not to steal stuff from you employer

Have you reinstalled your operating system?

it means the IT department only leave crappy old hard disks lying around to be half inched...

That is a MS DOS prompt and means the drive is probably blank having been formatted. Use the install media you have for your computer, and assuming its large enough, you should be able to install to the disk.

you do have install media dont you, or is the computer a little moody in that respect
