Trust is in such short supply these days.

I advertised my car for sale on Exchange and Mart online.

Man called, came to see it, started off making an offer well below asking price, but we eventually haggled up to an agreed price. He wanted to pay cash £2k so I said I'd like to go with him to my bank and pay it in over the counter as I didn't know him or what a good fake £50 or £20 looked like. He took exception to this, said I had insulted him. I tried to explain that I was only being cautious but he walked away from the deal .....

Was I being insulting asking to do this?

Does it make a difference if I told you he was a Jamacan?

Well within your rights and your instinct appears to have been right.

yes insulting, but fair play too. who has 2k in cash on them? when i sold a car for several k, guy came with a bankers draft for majority, obviuosly in the hope of a bit of bargining, and weighed up the balance with cash he went to get from the machine. this im told is fairly ordinary practice, not wads of cash Arthur Daley style.

UPDATE:

As last stated, I sent this guy an email requesting a Bank Transfer instead as I wasn't happy with PayPal. I specifically asked him NOT to use PayPal.

He went quiet for a couple of days so I assumed he was a scammer and I had scared him off. This morning I sent him a short email just saying that I was relisting the item.

He then sends me a payment through PayPal at his new, unverified, incorrectly typed address. Obviously I'm very annoyed. What can/should I do now? Ask him to reverse the payment? Can he do that?

There's too much that isn't quite right about the whole business that I'm not happy to go through with the PayPal transaction.

Keep his money and don't send the goods, scam him. And say you sent the goods to Conventry, or however he spelt it, and that they should arrive in the next few weeks. I don't know how paypal works but someone told me that if you send them a refund of, say £1. They can't get the rest if the money back as it says it's been refunded, I don't believe this as it seems too simple, but can anyone clarify?

If - and only if - he finds the balls to complain to PayPal, they'll "open an investigation", which consists of them asking you for a tracking number for the item and then ignoring anything else you say.

Of course.. all PayPal do is check that the tracking number was delivered.. not *what* was delivered...

I did a PayPal refund for somethng I sold on eBay a couple of days ago. The thing to consider is the PayPal fee - the seller/receiver of the money cops this and it might be substantial for a £2k+ transaction so fully support saying no to PayPal for this value.

When you do a PayPal refund you will be credited back wth all your PayPal fees. You have the option to set a lower value than the original transaction price (but not higher) for the refund. If you only refund £1, I think that's asking for trouble.

As for the "scam him back" - see my earlier thread about trust in these kind of transactions - "be honest and fair" is my motto, it's what makes the commercial world go round ...
