Worst ref I’ve seen at the Amex since we got promoted. It’s almost like he was waiting for any contact on a Newcastle player in the area so he could blow for a pen.

When OReilly went down, the ref literally half smiled & turned away. Alright wouid have probably been a soft pen to give but no worse than some of his other decisions.

I’d love to get all the clips together and ask him just why?

When Minteh was fouled in the first half by Burn, not only did Pawson not give a free kick but seemed to not care if Minteh could be hurt. Simply waited from a distance for him to get back to his feet so Newcastle could take a throw. And then a few minutes later when Tonali gets 'fouled' Pawson runs to his side and puts his arm round him like a worried parent. Seemed a pretty clear illustration of which team he cared more for.

I must admit I was really disappointed with Sky's Ref Watch yesterday. They concluded that Wieffer was lucky not to get a second yellow. For me that statement is only correct in the context of how Pawson had decided to referee the game. To not give the second yellow certainly seemed inconsistent.

However, it's all about angles and people really need to see the front on angle that was shown on Match of the Day. Look closely and you see that Wieffer touches the ball first, there is a really light touch on the ankle but what actually takes him down is Tonali deliberately clipping Wieffer's leg.

Examined in isolation I'm not convinced the O'Riley incident was enough for a penalty. The contact on the heel is minimal and he goes down a little too easy and is already waving his arms to appeal as he hits the deck. However, once again in the context of how ref was dying to give penalties it's amazing that he didn't give it. Those sort of contacts with ankles however slight have been given and had he given it I don't think VAR would have enough to change it.

Match of the Day coverage also shows it wasn't a foul by JPVH which led to the handball penalty. You can clearly see that Barnes drags his foot to make the contact.
