I got the impression that she had a divine right to win and it was somehow a lesser race because she didn't.. The conditions were the same for everyone and she just wasn't good enough on the day. Why all the hysteria?

probably more to do with our success starved media hyping up her chances until anything less than fabulous victory would have been a national disaster. massive credit to the japanese woman for putting in a fantastic burst at the hardest part of a very hard course...she simply blew away the opposition including radcliffe...

I think it's highly unlikely that Paula Radcliffe dropped out because she wasn't winning. Don't forget that in Olympic Games she has had a lot of heartbreak finishing 5th and 4th before. I think she would have been delighted with a bronze so that she had something to show for all her efforts over the years. Why do yourself irreperable damage if your body is telling you that you can't do it?

Paula will still get my vote in the Sports Personality.

Surely not. If she had won then fair enough but whatever way you cut it the pinnacle of marathon running is the Olympic Gold medal as she has not won, blame the heat the course, she is still without a medal. *

For sports personality of the year try Flintoff (Mainstay of a cricket team which has one 7 games in a row, 7 consecutive test 50's + a stack load of wickets), Pinsent for getting his 4th Gold or even Ben Ainslee for picking up his 2nd in a different class of boat to that which he won his first gold medal. All are more deserving than Radcliffe unless she somehow wins the 10,000 metres. In any case Rooney will undeservedly win despite playing in one team that almost got relegated and another that went out of the QF of the Euro championships - That's the obsession with football.

* As an aside the Japenese women identified that running downhill was not her strong point and the last stretch of the Marathon was all downhill. Her coach's then sent her to run in the Alps for a month to practice running downhill at altitude. That's practice for you

I could not believe the coverage yesterday on BBC and today in the press in general.

SHE BLOODY WELL BLEW IT! FACE THE FACTS AND STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR HER

I could not believe the amount of fawning and excuses for her performance and attempts to discredit the Japanese girl. When it really mattered she choked it and to most people it looked obvious that pyschologically she was broken when she realised she was out of the medals.

Now we've had the press conference i actually have more respect for Radcliffe herself as she has not offered up any real excuses and is mystified by her poor showing.

I want to know what a proffesional runner is doing wearing a hat in 100 degree heat, you lose a third of your body heat through the top of your head.

Incompetence.

obviously she thought that the increase in heat retention was more than offset by the shading that a cap gives. simple really...

Maybe my original comment was a tad harsh, but in all honesty I'm not at all suprised she failed. It seems the entire nation expected her to win, not giving a thought to the opposition, and ultimately that probably affected her than any heat.

I cannot believe you are saying that we expected English sports people to win and that put unfair pressure on them.. England in euro 2004 anyone :lolol:
