What are you on about? Why can't we compare Buddy Holly to the Beatles or the Kinks or anyfuckingbody in fact. Are they THAT untouchable that nobody even comes close to their GREATNESS?

Whether one believes it or not is debatable... there actually is said painting though that Julian actually did bring home. The debate is whether Julian's quote actually happened.

The familiarity that any of the Beatles had with Julian could be documented on a postage stamp! The import of one of his paintings woulda been miniscule to non-existent, and if someone (especially my own parent) called one of my schoolkid paintings "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" they'd want their head examined.

Let's get involved with the real world here, most song lyrics are dubious in relation to reality, and are simple attempts to make a nice rhyme that will sell records. Many, if not most are gibberish, and the 'real' ones that the likes of Phil Collins and Eric Clapton write have something a bit outlandish about them as well.
If my child fell out of a window to his death, I would think my sense of involvement and grief would be too great to even think about writing a weak ditty about the event.
Sorry, maybe it's just me.

They aren't are they? It's just a matter of taste, and it's "only rock and roll but I like it" as Jagger sang (a reasonable singer for a fairly 'workmanlike' blues tribute band)
My feelings for The WHO run a lot deeper than for the Beatles, but I appreciate that the Fab Four did make some outstanding songs and contributions to the music of the time - as well as the whole feel of the period that they existed in.

Certainly Ray Davies was a lyrical genius, The Manfred Mann, Zombies and Yardbirds were excellent, the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull went on to make some wonderful classics.
Also, several other bands should have been heard that weren't, at the time, and that is true up until today as well (some good bands will be ignored in favour of Franz Ferdinand and Stereophonics too!).

How do you measure greatness? They sold more records at the time to get to number 1, they had thousands of people queuing for hours and hours to get tickets for their gigs. They were the first British group to make an impact on America.

As I said I was a Beatles fan but I also loved the Kinks, Yardbirds, Hollies, Stones, Buddy Holly (who had died by the time the Beatles got famous) and others including the Everly Brothers.

There weren't the 'types' of music fans that seem to be about nowadays. People didn't ask if you liked a particular 'type' of music - it was more discussing what was in the charts that week or month.
