Paris Restuarants

Good Morning

Going to Paris for the day for my sisters 30th in July. Need a recommendation for a decent restaurant. Somewhere central, good but not extortionately expensive. Say 50 Euros a head ish.

Any other recommendations on what to do for the day? Haven't been for years.

Some of the menu deals around St Michel are incredible. Yeah it's like having dinner in Leicester Square, but some of the food is great and the value is phenomenal.

The Kokolion, 62, Rue Orsel in Montmartre is stunning. Up on the hill near Sacre Couer. Quite small so book ahead. Quite unapologetically French, but if you're going to Paris you don't want McD.

Last time we went I had marrow (ordered by mistake but lovely) and steak tartar. Both are a test of the chef and they were both great. Well worth checking out. And if you are in Montmartre/Pigalle, there are loads and loads of other good restaurants that are slightly less expensive than the ones down near the river.

Also a great shellfish place on the Left Bank but can't remember the name. Near Rue De Buci/Rue De Seine. Sells the shellfish on the street to passers-by and you can eat inside in the old cafe or at tables on the pavement. Anyone know the name (and shellfish may be thin on the ground in the Summer).

Nothing fancy at all but I do love le Gamin de Paris. Go there every time I'm there.

Get to the Marais, find the rue de Francs Bourgeois and where it meets the rue Vielle du Temple, head towards the Seine and it's on the right.

Don't deviate too far from duck with something and only a BINNER would skimp on the Best Chocolate Tart Ever for dessert. If it's busy they even give you little glasses of kir while you wait for a table.

Paris is full of places to eat, we used to go to the latin quarter there are decent priced creperies and cafes there which are good and don't cost a fortune. In the evening there is a lot of street entertainment also and lots of atmosphere.

Kokolion will give you a similar experience. No concession to English - hence me ordering marrow. These sort of places are always a bit of a gamble but are part of what a trip to Paris is about. Au Petit Riche added to my list to try.

It's not a restaurant but cafe Charlotte de l'Isle is about the best chocolate experience I can imagine: on the main narrow road down the middle of the Isle St Louis on the left hand side as you walk from Notre Dame.

Forget coffee: the drinking chocolate is literally nothing more than molten chocolate, drunk from tiny cups and served out of a porcelain toilet brush holder complete with brush; it's actually a big wooden spoon to stop it from congealing as it cools. The vast woman who presides over the place even appears to ration out the water - I guzzled mine down all at once and could barely breath once I had so much chocolate around my mouth, I looked like an negative picture taken of a Black And White Minstrel.

You emerge, hours later, dazed from pure chocolate rush, with teeth browner than the Queen Mother's. Plus you'll be unable to defecate for a week. And when you do, you produce a perfectly functionable house brick. It's brilliant.

My other recommendation would be to go anywhere that lists tarte tatin on the desert menu. Ranked #1 in the world for puds by me !
