Painkillers for injured legs

I've buggered up my leg playing footy and the whole calf and done the side of the lower leg now hurt like buggery. I want to go to bed soon but the pain is going to keep me awake so I want to take some painkillers. All I've got is paracetamol(tylenol to be precise). If I take one of these will it ease the pain or are they a) only for headaches/colds etc or b) bad for some reason?

Thanks for any (helpful...)medical advice!

They will help but I suggest taking Ibuprofen as well, especially if it's muscular damage. Get the highest dose you can eg 500mg which you can get "over the counter" from the pharmacy, not sure what the arrangements are where you are though.

Yeah you're ideally gonna want to combine the paracetamol with some Ibuprofen.

Paracetamol is a straight up painkiller whereas the Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and should help with any swelling

Unfortunately I can't take ibuprofen-it has an adverse effect on my stomach. All I can take is paracetmol.:(

In that case get your hands on some Co-Codamol.

The weakest combo (500mg Paracetamol/8mg Codeine) is sold over the counter here so I'd have thought you could get it without prescription in Japan.

Codeine is aces

Good call! Highly recommend the 500mg Paracetamol/30mg Codeine combo if you can get it over the counter there

Nice one! I'll have a lookfor that tomorrow-everywhere(within hobbling distance) is closed at the moment.

Guess it's just the paracetamol for now then.

Check the Paracetamol content in the Tylenol, if it's 500mg, take TWO, every four hours max of 8 in 24 hours (unless you're under 12, which I guess you are not!). ONE wont be enough.

Oh, and ICE, Raise and rest for first 48hours. Use HEAT on injury after that- all helps with your natural anti-inflammatory process.

I think codeine is classed as a controlled drug in Japan , so it may be prescription only.

I had some co-codamol in my bags when i last went over there and later discovered I could have been arrested under their drug laws

Can I take paracetamol and ibuprofen together?

Choose paracetamol first
Paracetamol should always be your first choice, because it has fewer side effects than ibuprofen.

Taking both medicines together
It’s best to take paracetamol first. Then take ibuprofen 1-2 hours later, but only if the paracetamol has not helped your symptoms. If necessary, you can take further doses at the same time, as long as you take care to avoid overdosing on either medicine.

Check if you still need both medicines
Each day, you should reconsider whether you still need to take both paracetamol and ibuprofen. It's best to avoid taking unnecessary medicines.

If your symptoms continue, you should contact your GP or call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.
