Wherever The Mood Takes Me
Match report from the afternoon away defeat versus Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton cruised to their first victory of the season against troubled Plymouth.

Goals by young striker Jake Robinson and mid fielder Richard Carpenter condemned Argyle to a fourth straight Championship defeat and moved Brighton above them in the table.

Plymouth's aging and ponderous defence had no answer to the pace and moment of Brighton's young attack.

The problems began for the visitors in the 11th minute when Leon Knight passed inside towards partner Robinson.

Taribo West, the Nigerian international making his away debut for Plymouth, should have dealt with the situation but he allowed Robinson to get the better of him.

Robinson then rolled the ball towards the empty net as Rufus Brevett made a desperate attempt to reach it.

It was one-way traffic in the first half as efforts rained in on Romain Larrieu's goal.

The Plymouth keeper was almost embarrassed when Knight dispossessed him as the Frenchman dwelt on the ball on the edge of his own area.

Knight's resulting shot was headed away from the vacant goal by West. Larrieu redeemed himself by holding a low drive from Carpenter, keeping out a far-post header by Knight with his feet and a fierce angled drive from the same player.

Incredibly, Plymouth could have gone in level, Mathias Doumbe somehow scooping over the bar from point-blank range from West's cross.

The second goal Brighton's supremacy warranted arrived a minute into the restart.

Albert Jarrett outran Anthony Barness before delivering a low cross which was cleared as far as Carpenter.

Brighton's captain for the day in the absence of the injured Jason Dodd found the roof of the net from 20 yards with a sweetly struck shot.

Brighton could have scored more goals as Knight was denied again by the busy Larrieu and Robinson volleyed narrowly over.

Plymouth rallied briefly once they were 2-0 down, Brighton keeper Wayne Henderson saving shots by Akos Buzsaky and West, who was given a torrid afternoon by Robinson.

Brighton 2 v 0 Plymouth
Brighton put paid to their dismal start to the new season with a dominant 2-0 victory against under-par Plymouth at the Withdean Stadium.

The Seagulls had endured a terrible start to the campaign, winless in the league and already knocked out of the Carling Cup to League Two Shrewsbury.

But Mark McGhee's side looked anything but out-of-sorts against the Pilgrims and could have won by as many as five goals - let alone two - with a little more precision in front of goal.

Jake Robinson sent the hosts on their way early on before a second-half screamer from Richard Carpenter put the game out of Plymouth's reach.

The hosts had by far the better of the opening exchanges with Leon Knight looking particularly sharp up front.

Taribo West meanwhile, playing his second game in Plymouth colours after a arduous summer transfer, looked somewhat off the pace at the heart of the visitors' defence.

Sure enough, it was the hosts who took the lead and predictably, Knight was in the thick of the action.

The former Chelsea trainee made space on the left wing before slipping Robinson through on goal with a clever pass after just 10 minutes.

And the youngster made the most of the chance, shaking off the efforts of the Plymouth defence with a fine display of strength before coolly slotting home through the legs of the unfortunate Plymouth goalkeeper Romain Larrieu.

Brighton have struggled to find any sort of form so far this season but looked a revitalised side, creating several chances to double their lead.

Robinson was thwarted by Larrieu with a powerful effort in the 18th minute while Carpenter tested the French stopper again only moments later.

Plymouth's in-form midfielder Paul Wotton sent Wayne Henderson sprawling across his goal with a 25th minute free-kick but, in truth, the Pilgrims deserved to be at least three down.

Knight looked a class above throughout but just could not find a way onto the scoresheet - brilliantly denied on two occasions by the outstanding Larrieu.

Yet despite all the hosts' dominance, Plymouth could have quiet easily gone in level at the break but for a hapless balloon over the bar from Mathias Doumbe only six yards out.

The second half could have hardly started in a better fashion for Brighton however.

For all their intricate first-half play, it was a 25-yard thunderbolt from the hugely impressive Carpenter that doubled the lead.

Albert Jarrett provided the pass and with only a minute gone in the second period, Larrieu was beaten for a second time.

If anything, Plymouth actually looked worse than their dismal first-half showing and continued to ride their luck at the back.

Knight's profligacy in front of goal continued for the Seagulls, missing three chances in little more than five minutes.

Doumbe had another half-chance for the visitors late on but they should be relieved not to have lost by a greater margin.
