OT - XP help, bug or complete muppet?

I just set my missus' Hotmail account so it would use Outlook Express as the default mail setting. On reopening Outlook I get a message that asks if I want to use OE as my default mail program. I click Yes as I do.

Then when sending mail she got a message saying she had no default mail setting. On checking IE properties, Programs, the email setting is blank.

When I drop the box down I get a choice of Microsoft Outlook or nothing, a 1 line drop down box.

Is this an XP bug? Do I just uninstall Oulook? Or am I a complete

Any help greatly appreciated before I fling her laptop towards Ebisu.

I think you need to go to the Tools and options of OE and make sure you've ticked the "Make OE the default mail client box".
IE will only respond to what its been told by other progs on this instance.
