As people have said, it depends what you like.
If you're going to hire a car i'd really recommend just going to Gozo. It's a truly beautiful place, went last year, have been dozens of times. Very quiet but lots of good food and just stunning.
It's also surprisingly green and lush most of the year. There's about 8 different places to swim, 2 sandy beaches, and Dwerja Bay, my favourite place in the world...

If you find yourself in The Balutta bay area of Sliema /St Juilians check out Cheekers bar run by the eccentric Pepe .Turn left off Tower Road by the Plaza hotel go past Nappa bar and take the 2nd left onto Triq Mons g Depiro opens at 2045 pm nightly.

Last time I was out there I remember being gobsmacked in a bookshop that the Maltese Football Yearbook runs to about 1200 pages. Though that does include Gozo

I think they have the oldest Man ure supporters club or summat - I remember red nose going there to commemorate 100 years or so.
