ok guys see if you can get to the bottom of this one.

Im trying to watch skyplayer on my laptop and if you use it you will no it has 3 settings for quality being low medium and high. When ever I try to watch it on the high setting it is constantly buffering(very annoying). So I have tried to look into why. My wireless connection speed is generally 54 mbps but does seem to drop quite a but to either 36 or 24. So im thinking this might be the problem. As the router is down stairs I have just sat right next to the router to see if this would make a difference but no. So I plugged in the ethernet cable and my speed goes up to 100 mbps here we go im thinking but again no, when i try to watch skyplayer and a bit of la liga I just get buffering!! So by process of elimination it has to be the laptop but I have no idea what!! So good people can you help!!!

im on sky broadband if that helps

Cheers all

There are a few things to check:

-How fast is your broadband connection? Do something like a bbmax check to see what the throughput is.
-Are any other machines connecting to the internet? Do.the lights on the router flash away when your laptop isn't doing anything?
-Do you have any bittorrent software on your computer. If you do and its uploading stuff this can have a detrimental effect on connection speeds of other apps.
-What's it like with iplayer?
-Try clearing out the cache, installing the latest flash player and give it another go

Thanks for the reply . There another computer connecting to the internet. The lights dont flash when my laptop isnt doing anything. I did have utorrent on it but i havent used it in ages so I have just uninstalled it. iplayer is totally fine which is even more strange.

I did the BBmax test and it come back with 438 kbps download speed and 336 upload speed but not sure if this is good or bad!

That means you are running at less than half a megabit of connection speed, the entire web for you must be slow. Disconnect the router from the bt line and reconnect it after about 15 mins. If that doesn't work, contact sky or try a new microfilter.

To be honest its not We are on the 20 meg package from sky but clearly not getting that.when sky installed it they said we could get upto 7meg which i thought would be plenty so im guessing something is not quite right there. Silly question but whats a microfilter??!!

With ADSL, a microfilter is the device which splits the phone signal so you can connect it to the router. To improve your connection speeds sometimes you can put the microfilter and router closer to the master phone socket.

The connection speed on ADSL lines varies if there is noise on the line, or excessive loss of packets, where the exchange would reduce the connection speed to improve line stability. Speak to sky or bt, they can do a line test and/or reset the connection

It could also be that you have viruses/spyware on your laptop without you even realising which is causing you the issues, or lots of unneeded processes running in the background which can also be causing your issues!

Is there another laptop/computer you can test the Sky Player with on your internet connection to prove once & for all where the problem lies?

This.

Your speed report suggests that you're getting around 0.5mb download speeds, despite Sky offering "up to" 20mb. Although this could be problems with the line into the house and 'noise interference' on the line, it could just be the local telephone exchange in your area. Where I live, the maximum speed I can get is 1.5mb despite paying for "up to" 20mb broadband with Virgin Media. I've investigated a little, and it's a common problem in my immediate area. You might need to drop the quality on Sky Player to have it stream properly.

At least in my area, BT Infinity has been rolled out - so as soon as my Virgin contract expires, I'm getting fibre optic. Going from 1.5mb to 38mb. BRING. IT. ON.
