Downloaded security essentials and uninstalled Norton without any problems. Thanks for the tips all.

Go to settings and Set your default levels...........standard installation allows "threats",you need to change the levels..

I use ESET's NOD32, which costs about £25/year, but doesn't slow your machine down and also will find stuff that Norton, McAfee misses.

The free ones (AVG, Avast) are ok for general use, but will often miss some of the complicated viruses.

I've tried them all over a period of years and it's a no-brainer for me. :bigwave:

Microsoft Security Essentials has been doing it happily for me for ages.

Like another poster, actually getting rid of Norton (which slowed my pc to a snail's crawl) was a pain and there are indeed programmes to actually 'get rid' of it !

To be fair as porn sites have become mainstream, highly profitable businesses, you're unlikely to encounter any viruses or malware in them.

Its the free stuff that's the risk. The businesses want people to keep paying.

Ditto its finding the torrents that can be the problem, not the torrented files. Too many dodgy sites claiming to have torrents and are actually linking to virus payloads.

Looking to ditch my Norton 360 subscription for my home use (the usual; a couple of messageboards, online shopping, banking, surfing porn). First question; is this a good move? If so, second question; what free antivirus software would you recommend?

What Security Software do you recommend? - Ask Leo!

This was updated May 5, 2013, so is current.

Ask Leo is a long established website covering all aspects of PC use. Subscribe to receive regular emails.

I've used it for years. Not just Leo's opinions, but publishes users comments and queries.

As an ignorant web user; what are deemed as really dodgy habits? Is it porn? what other genres of browsing should be used with care?

I've always wanted to ask this question, but also I bumped into 'lemon party' the other day just trying to buy some plasters (don't do it kids)

There's nothing at all dodgy about any of the big porn websites.

The the times when you need to be taking care is when downloading cracked or pirated software.

You know when your paid for antivirus software is crap when it lets through a trojan that disables it. Now using AVG with no problems
