Police operation adopts chavs' ID

By Ben Ashford, South London Press
COPS have codenamed a crackdown on soccer hooligans after "chav" label Burberry.
Police chiefs launched Operation Burberry to blitz thugs at Millwall games, many of whom wear the distinctive shirts and caps.
The move heaps further embarrassment on the top UK fashion house after wear-ers were barred from several bars and clubs over claims that the label has become a yobs' "uniform".
Bosses at Burberry - a favourite of celebrities including former EastEnders soap star Danniella Westbrook and "Lotto Lout" Mike Carroll - have refused to say whether they will be taking legal action.
Lewisham police have launched Operation Burberry to tackle outbreaks of violence between followers of League One Millwall and rival fans.
A Scotland Yard spokes-woman said: "Operation Burberry is an ongoing drive to tackle disorder at Millwall football matches.
"We choose codenames to specifically identify all our investigations.
"A number of people have been arrested and charged under Operation Burberry."
Established in 1856 and with stores worldwide, Bur-berry is one of the most exclusive names in British fashion.
But the label has recently suffered a series of embarrassing blows to its image.
Pals of Prince William donned caps and shirts made from the distinctive Burberry check to pose as "chavs" for a fancy dress party in April.
A spokeswoman for Burberry said: "This isn't the sort of thing we would be prepared to comment on."
