I’m a total sucker for a cold open and to that end Spielberg is possibly without equal.

If I had to pick one particular one it would be Indiana Jones and the raiders of the lost ark.

It immediately characterises the protagonist and lets you know in no uncertain terms exactly what you’re in for over the next couple of hours. Masterful.

Agreed very good, as is pulp fiction. great opening music in both.

Like the Indiana Jones films opening scenes.

Naked gun opening always cracks me up.

Another one for Inglorious Basterds. Extremely tense, very sad, yet hilariously funny at the same time. That takes superb writing and brilliant acting. What a film.

Another film I saw at the huge, now long gone Screen Three at the Brighton Odeon. I think the whole audience held their breath during the bungee jump.

In my opinion there have only been two great Bond films since Timothy Dalton: Goldeneye and Casino Royale, both directed by Martin Campbell.

Another great Screen Three experience: Pulp Fiction with a near full house. I think the opening scene has already been nominated in this thread and with good reason.

God I miss Screen Three: once the biggest screen south of London. Leon, Apollo 13, Die Hard with a Vengeance... Films need to be seen big.

Some wussy selections so far. You need to go back to 1929 and Luis Bunuel for real horror.

Even by NSC standards this is a low bar, but in it's defense it achieves exactly what it sets out to do:-

It would be rude to not then follow it up with Richardson handing out flyers:-
