If East Sussex and Brighton & Hove were to become one authority Saltdean would become reunified. Would we all have to head up there, push a wall over and sing David Hasselhoff songs?
There is a good few feet gap between the Welcome to signs for Brighton & Hove/East Sussex on the A259. Is that some kind of self governing enclave ?

The plans to do away with district and borough councils in favour of a unitary authority…….what happens to the nimby parish councils, do they go too ?

If we’re re-drawing the county map in this way, can we at least please do whatever it takes to get Crawley transferred to Surrey?

Or, preferably, Neptune.

Dreams do come true.

Dreams do come true.
“Michael Jones, leader of the council, had previously said that Crawley’s identity needed to be ‘strongly retained’ during any reforms.”

What identity is that then? Stabbings and teenage pregnancies?

The massive unitary authorities, with their elected mayors, looks like a good way to an elected second chamber (Senate).

The public consultation about the devolution proposals is here. It includes proposals for an elected mayor and a kind of cabinet of 6 2 councillors each from B&H , ESCC and WSCC and a less powerful committee of other nominees. Powers over economy, transport and planning.

No mention of the electoral system to elect the mayor. The Tory Crime Commissioner wants to be their candidate.

I've heard a rumour that the new authority will be based in Lewes.

There's a free event to debate the impact on climate and the environment on 3 April in Brighton, addressed by Bella Sankey.

Public consultation is just a legal nicety, absolutely no notice will be taken of any objections. ESCC had one recently on whether booking a time slot at recycling centres should be introduced. 90% of respondents were against it, it is being introduced so two fingers to them. This will be the same.

As for mayoral candidates my view is they should not be affiliated to any political party, they should all be independent and put forward their views on how our great county should move forward.

Sadly not a chance of this... issues like housing, policing and transport are always going to be politicised.

Unification would elevate our county into the top 10 in England in terms of area and population.

Moreover, it would help our brand, particularly in terms of tourism and wine.

I'm all for it.

I have completed the form.

The real issue I have is how unbalanced East and West are. Joining the two will be like the joining of East and West Germany together. The utter under investment in infrastructure in East Sussex has made it the poor relation.

If a good mayor could be elected who can ensure a balanced investment across the whole county then I'm fully behind it.

I always thought my hometown of Seaford was very similar to Dresden.

Consultation will be a farce. No matter what views are put forward, the result has already been announced - mega-councils, no choice offered.

It's as if Cardiff City's nutty owner had tried the placate the fans by saying they were going to consult on whether or not to change colour - and there were three options, scarlet, vermilion, or red. It's not a choice.

Could you give me some examples of under-investment in East Sussex, please? OK, we’ve not got an inch of motorway, like Rutland, Suffolk, Norfolk, Dorset and Cornwall, but I think I’m happy in their company. I suppose West Sussex has a marvellous urbanised coast line of Littlehampton, Bognor and Worthing while all we’ve got is a few birds fluttering over Seaford Head, the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head. But nobody could argue with the investment in urban living exemplified by Crawley in West Sussex, while the East has run-down dumps like Lewes, Battle and Rye.

Rape of Hastings, Sussex
This is exactly what they wanted when they split us up - West Sussex, East Sussex, Brighton and Hove - griping, division and infighting amongst our own. We need to rise as one, because we are one.
