Been once Yorkie and really enjoyed the Acropolis.

(Although I have never experienced such heavy rain in my life when we got down)

We really should give them the Elgin Marbles back - imagine them displaying them at the opening ceremony, it would have been fantastic for them.

Its the saddest thing in the museum at the top - here's where the Elgin marbles should go, but the British won't let us have them.

I was ashamed of my Government that day and I don't care if some posh twat "legally" bought them - on the Acropolis is where they belong !

I agree entirely.

The British 'nicked' them and put them in the British Museum.

Take them back to Athens.

I have friends who live there and love the place. Greeks are very hospitable.

Not sure of the history, but I believe they were "bought" when Athens was under the control of Turkey (or would that have been the Ottoman's then?) - We were at least resposible for receiving stolen goods.

Anyway it shocking, how the British Museum can claim they are part of OUR heritage is unbelievable. I wouldn't be surprised if most people in this country don't even know they exist. Its a national embarresment as far as I'm concerned.

Apparently George Bush was being shown round The Acropolis by the Greek Prime Minister when Dubya was heard muttering 'Dont worry, we'll get the bastards that did this'

....give Australia back to the Aborigines, USA back to the Native Americans.....Scotland back to the Vikings.....it's history for goodness sake.....if you want to get "angry angry angry" lets concentrate on sorting out real 2004 problems like the starving in the Sudan rather than wasting millions on firework displays at a sports event ??

You're absolutely right , in the big scheme of things they are unimportant slabs of rock.

Unfortunately the British Museum and the government seem to think otherwise, see them as part of our national heritage.

I'd rather see Greek taxpayers money looking after them wouldn't you ?

I didn't mention them as some throw-away political point. The Greek government have been lobbying for years to get them back
and this was hightened again recently due to Olympics coming back to Athens.

I think it would have been a brilliant guesture for this government to have handed them back for the Olympics. With the UK having such bad overseas PR at the moment due to the Iraq war etc.., it would have done THIS country a power of good in the eyes of the world.

They are an integral part on of an Ancient Greek monument which completely dominates Athens and the guesture would not have been lost on the Greeks already on a high after winning Euro 2004.

The world are watching and Blair could have handed them over as part of the Ceremony? Cambell you missed a trick there my friend.

As for wasting money on fireworks, the Greeks would probably disagree because the Olympics always seems to make a profit for the host nation.

Scotland back to the Vikings ? :lolol: :lolol: :lolol:

Sorry, can't see the link to Sudan, but all world conflicts have their roots in history too.
