That criteria would then surely rule out many events as almost everything has a world championship/cup to be won.

Yes - a sport can have a world championship and the Olympics still be the pinnacle. Rowing has World CHampionships every year. I take an interest but it is the Olympics the rowers all want to win. Track Cycling is the same.

Yeah, I know, alluded to that in my second paragraph, I just don't believe in the mindset that if the Olympics isn't the pinnacle of your chosen discipline then it should be looked down on, as football, tennis etc. are. Though never hockey, which I've never understood...
