Olympic football - worthwhile?

Simple enough question really, do you rate/watch/value Olympic football (or think it counts for much)?

Personally, I like that you get to see at least one soon-to-be top player (Tevez, Messi) just before they make it big, other than that though...*shrug* take it or leave it.

Never have done before, I find it difficult watching footy with no-one to support but I'm really looking forward, think 'Team GB' will have a very entertaining team - Bale, Ramsey, Beckham, Giggs - What's not to like!!

Agreed, though I do wonder who the token Scot will be...

Don't think anyone will be getting a game unless they're good enough, that could well rule out the chance of a scottish player in Team GB

It's Team GB, I suspect from a political point of view the powers that be very much want at least one Scottish and (Northern) Irish player there.

There are certain sports that just should not be in the Olympics. Tennis is one. Football is another. If Beckham is picked it will be a farce.

Agree with the Beckham sentiment but why shouldn't football be there? It's only viewed as a joke in Europe, taken quite seriously elsewhere, like the Club World Championship.

I've never really had any interest in Olympic football but I'm sure I will this year, it's more of an Olympic sport than BMX in my opinion.

The Olympics should be the pinnacle of achievement in a sport. Olympic football is a sideshow, an after-thought. I can tell you who won the World Cups going back decades. I can't tell you who won the Olympics football last time.

I dunno - I would think winning the BMX Gold Medal is the highest honour in that sport - so for me, it is fair enough to be there. Or are you saying it is not really a sport ?

Probably not had any interest in it because in my life time we have never actually been in it! Got to remember though that, primarily, it is an under 23 tournament.

My mate's got tickets and the possibility of someone dropping out means I might get to go. To me it's just the chance to watch some decent football even though I think it's a bit of a sideshow. I think for many of the players it's the chance to play in a home Olympics that makes it something different than the norm, but other than that can't see it being the pinnacle of Beckham's or Giggs's career.

That criteria would then surely rule out many events as almost everything has a world championship/cup to be won.

Admittedly, the perspective over which means more changes from sport to sport but it shouldn't force them to be mutually exclusive, it's still something worth winning (and remember, other parts of the world do value it).

Unfortunately there are many sports there that shouldn't be, eg tennis, plus all those that are based on the opinion of judges rather than proper competition. And by that I mean the likes of synchronised swimming, diving, ice skating and gymnastics. I know boxing is judged but that is a direct contest between two individuals competing against each other at the same time.

Having said that, those sports are there and I shall support anyone representing Team GB (apart from Dwain Chambers and David Millar)

Team GB women will be playing a friendly match against Sweden at the Riverside stadium.

Straight afterwards, Team GB man will be playing Brazil.

One ticket gets entry for both matches.
