I’m not 100% certain, but I’m fairly sure I can remember a supermarket type shop there around early 1960’s (well before what was the Finefare building) I’ve a strange recollection of it may have being called Charalls. If that’s right then obviously pub would have been demolished probably before mid 1950’s

totally agree with you. Cheap plastic shopfronts, that never ever get cleaned, replacing individual classic. Makes for crappy run down shit holes everywhere. Why oh why have planning authorities ever allowed this to happen.
More amazing is that the shop keepers have such little regard for their customers that they don’t give a shit what their business looks like either.
The Churchill Square one is particularly egregious.

I don't know why irks me. But you always put question marks after each one when the place is so obviously the one you suggest. Like above where it actually says 'Freshfield Inn' !

Yep. Let's be honest here, as much as we might all love the team with the same name, Brighton, on the whole, is a bit of a dump.
I was just thinking exactly the same. I much prefer the "old look".
Speaking of which, would anybody have any pics of Upper Lewes Road late 50s/60s? I'm particularly interested in a proper old-fashioned cobblers shop that was on the corner of either Aberdeen Road or Inverness Road. Thanks.
