I was at my dads at the w/e and found an old world atlas, what realy interested me was a country called East Pakistan which looks to me like it's now called Bangladesh, I didnt know this, was this country part of what is now known as Pakistan and the atlas calling it West Pakistan?

I believe Pakistan used to be part of India, think it became an independant state in the late 40's.

It was created in 1947 on independence from the Brits - Ghandi was devastated by the creation of a separate state. The movement of refugees across the border at the time of partition was one of the bloodier episodes in history - trains would pull into Lahore station with blood pouring out of the carriages etc etc.

When I was in Lahore, I missed watching the changing of the guard - for which they choose the tallest soldiers in India and Pakistan - and went to watch England playing CRICKET instead...

And the two countries have been part of one of the greatest Mexican stand-offs in history ever since, in Kashmir, apart from the occasional dust up.

Bangladesh was part of Pakistan when India and Pakistan became independent in 1947 and was known as East Pakistan. It became independent in its own right in the 60s I think (might have been early 70s) after a war in which India got involved as well. It then took on the name Bangladesh.
