Can we just sign HB&B up? He's got to be better with a gun than he is with the English language.

why do people assume national service mean putting young adults into front line combat? there are many roles for them to be deployed in within the UK, and not even necessarily military. the notion of a national service needs to be revistied because far too many young have no respect or sence of responsibility. for two or three generations we have had no dicsipline. parents dont provide it, schools daren't provide it. but society cry about the lack of it. so either, think about how a national serive might work to the advantage of all, or basically shutup about the chavs and scrotes who dont care, because you havent got a solution.

Remembered this the other day funnily enough - wish it was brought back myself. Stick some of the d*ckheads from Jeremy Kyle on it - that should straighten them up.

On topic, its an awful idea. Not all young people sit on their arses doing f*ck all. That said, the ones that do spend 1 year + unemployed must be forced to do something, be it voluntary work with a charity or something else, the latter being much more rewarding and worth while.

I'm in the age bracket which would be forced to do NS, yet i am in a full time job with a decent wage and contributing to society ? Why should i effectively be punished/forced to do this ?
Your quite right and you wouldn't be forced to do NS...the idea as many have said is to get those who don't want to work to do something for the community. I volunteered for 12 years service in the Navy in the 50s,thus avoiding being called up... I was in the Service I wanted to be in,but full respect to the NS men who went to Korea and fought with Valour...those who came out were better than when they went in.

I was thinking this,I would agree with National Service but it needs to have a complete re-think with totally out of the box ideas, you would still need the discipline involved with people being in a controlled atmosphere like a barracks or camp for example but it should not just be about the military side of it,if you dont like the military side of matters there could be options of a basic community service,or a house building "army" where youngsters are taught skills and all the builds are purely for social housing.Just off the top of my head you could join an environmental "army" for your duration, monitoring the countryside and wildlife maybe or clearing disused brownfield shitholes into new parkland......the options are endless.I would have people exempt if in full time education apart from that i havnt got a clue what im talking about........just think maybe the national service option might benefit many youngsters who have already decided life on the dole and benefits is all the options they have left........criminal waste of people if we continue to let that happen.

There are about 900,000 under 25s in this country without work, a consequence of the recession, a Pensions crisis forcing 60-something's to work a lot longer than expected, off-shoring of so many jobs previously carried out in the UK and visas being issued to foreign nationals so they can come to the UK to fill jobs that should be made available to people in the UK.

Why then do you think these people should be punished and forced to do National Service?

I've lost count of the number of jobs my daughter applied for in the 18 months after she left college. She has had so little work since then, always temporary, always very short term. So many rejections due to lack of experience because for the same low wage, they can get people with far more experience. The main contribution from the Job Centre was to tell her she had to do unpaid 'work experience' as a cleaner somewhere on the other side of Worthing with a 5am start. No suggestion as to how she would get there or the safety aspects of a teenager being out on her own at that time of the morning. Don't do it and they'd stop her benefits.

She is now working on trying to set up on her own. She's lucky because I have a well paid job and can afford to support her and help her out in trying to achieve her goal. How many others are in her position but without that support? As far as the government is concerned she's not claiming so must be in work.

I know of others her age and like her with A levels on zero hours contracts with a supermarket. They don't get to ring in to see if they're needed. They have to spend what little they have travelling to work only to be told there's no work for them. I know of graduates who have had more than a year out of work, one with a Maths degree who has been out of work for over 2 years. I'm in my 50s and can't remember a time when it's been this tough for the younger generation.

Be grateful you have a job and one with a decent wage but please don't demonise those not as fortunate as yourself.

Im not demonising anyone unemployed, before my current job, I was unemployed for 9 months after leaving education with no help from anyone as the Job Centre were useless. It is difficult out there and people work their arses off trying to find work and these people are the ones you would want to employ, but alas - there is a job shortage.

I was only saying that I shouldnt have to do this as I am lucky and am not doing too badly for myself. I dont mean all unemployed young people should be forced to do NS - far from it. Those who are working their arses off, doing unpaid work experience/voluntary work shouldnt have to do NS, but those who are long term unemployed who simply dont put ANY effort in are the ones that could be candidates for it, those who simply sit on their arses, just claiming their benefits without doing any work for it - these are the ones who give the unemployed a bad name.

Another issue is that the government dont seem to care about youth unemployment, you leave education and rarely go straight into work now and you get no help - this is unacceptable.
