Because he gave the penalty, so play stopped at the moment of the alleged incident. Once it was determined it was not a handball, he had to restart from where the offence was wrongly given.
I accept that was actually the right decision… now.

However, watching the game at home it wasn’t clear that a pen was the decision taken at the time and certainly the commentators had no idea a pen had been given either. It’s just screaming for officials to be mic’d up - surely it’s just a matter of time.

Incidentally the main commentator (Irish chap) was bloody awful.

What a load of f***ing bollocks (by the ref not you) given the nonsense with linesmen and offside these days.

Why was he sent to look at the screen. It clearly wasn’t a penalty.

Referees in the country are terrible. Awful.

Yes, worked out subsequently that was what happened. But his signalling was so vague very few knew what was happening at the time: both on the pitch and in the stands. He just shuffled around after the ball went out. No signal for a pen. That's why everyone was so confused, utterly horrendous performance from him.

Can't believe he gave it in the first place either. Also couldn't work out why we got bookings for fouls as they broke through and they didn't when they did it.

Utterly hopeless ref. Very far out of his depth.

No need for miking up. Just needs to learn how to ref a football match.

This.

Half our stand was cheering when he made the overrule sign as assumed he was giving the pen,
The rest of us assumed he would give the corner (not knowing the ridiculous ruling)

He was sent to the screen as he had given then pen.

It was VAR actually working correctly for once.

As mentioned above, I was particularly incensed with Pawson stopping play for an injured Chelsea player (not injured).
He grabbed the ball and prevented the game from progressing until Chelsea were fully back in position.
The injured player wasn't forced off the pitch for 30 seconds either.

Buananotte was forced off the pitch in the first half for a similar situation.

Typical double standards from PGMOL

VAR were ok today
:ban:

You can be thrown in gaol these days just for saying you're English.

(I happen to agree with you, in case it isn't obvious  - so perhaps you need to put me on ignore  )
