Albion were 3-1 up with ten minutes remaining against a Reds side that had Adam Bogdan and Jose Enrique in the starting eleven, but were pegged back to 3-3 in stoppage time ahead of Jerome Sinclair’s extra-time winner.
Liverpool came close to breaking the deadlock inside the opening four minutes when Pedro Chirivella played in a superb ball towards Sheyi Ojo, but Christian Walton was on hand to save the effort.
However, it was Albion that took the lead thanks to Tom Dallison, who headed home from a free-kick with eight minutes on the clock.
Liverpool responded just moments later through Enrique, whose deflected effort beat Walton to put the hosts back on level terms.
James Tilley re-established Albion’s lead when Simon Rusk’s side were awarded a penalty and the young forward made no mistake in dispatching the spot-kick beyond Bogdan.

The Seagulls had a chance to extend their lead shortly after the restart when Jesse Starkey forced Bogdan into another save with a low strike. But Albion did make it 3-1 after Tilley reacted to some indecisive Liverpool defending and fired home the loose ball from a corner.
The hosts brought on Ryan McLaughlin to add fresh impetus to the attack and he made an immediate impact by slotting home Enrique’s cross to make it 3-2 with 25 minutes left.
Another substitute, Sinclair, was brought on, and he turned the tie on its head by scoring an equaliser, after Walton could only parry McLaughlin’s effort into his path.
The McLaughlin/Sinclair combination worked to full effect in extra-time, with the latter tapping the ball home from close range to send Albion out of the cup.
ALBION: Walton; Hunt, Rea, Dallison, Barnett; Hutchinson, Molumby, Starkey (Harper 97); Tilley, Bjordal (Ward 70), Ayunga (Kandi 83).
