Sir Alf Ramsey had a fine record as Ipswich manager against Brighton & Hove Albion with seven wins out of ten. However, the future England boss was unable to halt Albion’s handsome 4-1 victory at the Goldstone in April 1959. Here is the matchday programme.
The result helped Billy Lane’s Brighton side finish 12th in their first-ever season in Division Two, one point ahead of the East Anglians.
By 1962, though, Ipswich were crowned champions of England, as Jimmy Leadbetter’s deep crosses supplied the strike-force of Ted Phillips and Ray Crawford. Leadbetter had joined Town from Brighton in June 1955 while Crawford went on to serve Brighton as youth team coach under Pat Saward from 1972. Here is Ray furthest on the right in the second row.
In goal for Ipswich in the late 1950s and early 1960s was Roy Bailey. His son Gary, Manchester United’s keeper, famously conceded six goals to Ipswich in March 1980.* For this famous game, the matchday programme cover is worth a look for Brighton fans. It features some exciting action from Town’s Division One match with the Seagulls in the previous month.

Despite Graham Moseley’s troubles in the photo, he only conceded once in a creditable 1-1 draw at Portman Road. In a six-year spell at the Goldstone Ground, ‘Mose’ even found time for a month loan to Ipswich in March 1984. Another notable club connection is that Brighton’s goalscorer in this match, Gary Stevens, had been rejected by Town as a schoolboy.Stevens went on to give a sparkling performance for Brighton against Ipswich on the opening day of the 1982/83 season. For the visitors, future Albion defender Russell Osman also showed his England credentials in defence.
Despite Ipswich being one of the country’s top sides at the time, Brighton recorded two notable victories over the Blues in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Firstly, Alan Mullery’s Albion knocked Ipswich out of the League Cup in 1976. Then, in 1980, Michael Robinson’s winner stunned Ipswich at the Goldstone. Here is the Daily Mirror’s report of the Division One fixture.
By the 1990/91 campaign, both sides were in Division Two but the Seagulls were seeking a return to the top flight. TVS’s news report covered the last day of Division Two, when Dean Wilkins’s euphoric last-gasp free-kick sent sent Brighton into the Play-Offs. Happy days!
