Gus Poyet has urged his strikers to take their chances ahead of the trip to Charlton Athetic on Saturday.
The Seagulls have scored less goals than any other team in the top half of the Championship and the Albion boss would like his strikers to stand up and make themselves indispensable to his starting XI.
Poyet told seagulls.co.uk, “Someone needs to score. The strikers need to play for the team, understand the way we play and help the team, but at the same time score and help us win the game.
“These are the things we need to put into consideration and if they have the chance they need to play their game. If everything goes alright they are going to have more chances.
“In my group of players there are not many who are really ahead of the rest. They are very similar and if they are performing well they have the chance to be in the team in front of someone else. It’s completely up to the players.
“I say to them, show me what you can do but show me for the team. If you show me for yourself you are not playing. We’ll see. Without playing for themselves they need to start producing because they are playing in very specific positions. They need to score goals.”
Poyet’s side have a good record at The Valley since the Uruguayan took over the reins at Albion, but Saturday will be the first time that his side face an Addicks team under the guidance of Chris Powell.
“They are getting results at home and they are learning the way that they should play to get results. They are very specific in what they do, with the commitment and their belief.
“The pitch will also make a difference because it’s one of the biggest in the division. There is space and a possibility of playing, which on paper should be good for us, but you never know. They will fight until the last second so it’s another very difficult game for us.”
Meanwhile, Poyet praised Spanish defender Inigo Calderon for his contribution to the squad since falling down the pecking order, after Bruno arrived from Valencia during the summer.
The 30-year-old has been called upon to play in various positions across the defensive line during recent weeks following injuries and the Albion boss felt that is a credit to his professionalism.
“It’s a difficult situation for him. We all know that the right-back position is his best position but Bruno has been one of the most consistent performers, and at a very good level. That particular position has been very difficult for Calde to play.
“But, because of how professional he is and the way he looks after himself we have been playing him everywhere we can. I’d imagine it’s difficult for him but it’s great for me and for the team to have a player like Calde in the squad.
“Sometimes it can be a little unfair on players but that’s football.”
