Eric Steele- A superb performance from ‘Groucho’, including a fine stop to deny Mike Rathbone, changing direction after a deflection.
Chris Cattlin- This was Catt’s penultimate league game for the Seagulls before retiring.
Gary Williams- Gary’s excellent free-kick provided the cross for Rollings’s winner.

Brian Horton- Led the team to a lap of honour after the match.
Andy Rollings- Got the winner in the second half with a looping header that seemed to take an eternity to hit the net.
Paul Clark- Successfully shackled the skills of the talented Duncan McKenzie.

- Had scored at Ewood Park in a 1-1 draw earlier on in the season.
Peter Ward- Caused all sorts of problems for Rovers with his close control, speed and explosive power. Hit the bar in the first half.
Teddy Maybank- Worked hard throughout, and opened the scoring on 18 minutes with a smoke-bomb assisted goal.
Peter Sayer- Enjoyed a jinking run on the right-wing before floating an inviting cross for Maybank’s opener. Also played his part in defence, helping the Seagulls clear their lines.
Malcolm Poskett- Hit nine league goals during the 1978/79 season, a valuable contribution to the promotion push.

Derek Fazackerley- Preston-born defender who made 312 league appearances games for the Lancashire club by the end of the season.
Noel Brotherston- Added variety and unpredictability to Rovers’ points of attack.
Simon Garner- In his first season with Rovers. Simon eventually made 474 league appearances for the club, scoring 168 goals.
Joe Craig- Scottish attacker, previously with Patrick and Celtic. Scored five league goals that 1978/79 season.
Martin Fowler- Denied in the 78th minute by a brilliant stop from Eric Steele.
Duncan McKenzie- A big money signing, £100,000 from Chelsea, but found it hard to get involved. Won the free-kick that led to Rovers’ consolation goal
Sub: John Aston- Veteran of Manchester United’s European Cup winning side in 1968. Curled a beautiful free-kick four minutes from time.
