Lewis Dunk says Brighton & Hove Albion’s defenders are feeling confident after keeping back-to-back clean sheets at home, but says there is still a lot of work to be done before the team can feel safe from relegation.

Albion will have a rare weekend off after the match against Reading was rescheduled for next Tuesday and Dunk says the squad are still buoyant following a 2-0 victory over promotion-chasing Derby.

He told seagulls.co.uk, “We were under the cosh, everyone was putting their bodies on the line and it was great to get the win.

“There’s nothing better for a back four and a goalkeeper to get a clean sheet. That’s your job so once you do that, then it’s down to the forwards to score us the goals and get us the wins.

“Obviously our position in the table means any win is a good one. At the moment we need the points on the table, but from a personal point of view I like to keep as many clean sheets as I can, like every defender does. I’m just happy we got the win, but as a defence we also focus on getting clean sheets.”

The 23-year-old then admitted he would rather have a game to prepare for this weekend and is eager to carry on the momentum from Tuesday’s result.

“I always want to play because as a back four that’s always what you want to do. The sooner a game comes the better, because you train to play.

"After Tuesday it probably would have been good for the next match to come sooner because we’re feeling confident after beating Derby, so hopefully we can take that into next week.

“You never know what’s going to happen in this league. We can’t take our foot off the gas and think we’re not in trouble. We still need points in the table and to take it one game at a time and build up as many wins as we can.”

Finally Dunk spoke about the joys of fatherhood and is hopeful that his son Freddie could have a future in the game.

“I’m enjoying it and am now just watching him grow up so fast. He’s sitting up now and is becoming more nosey, looking up and taking notes of everything.

“He notices faces now; I’m just waiting for that next step when he gets on his feet and he’s going to be a nightmare!

“My girlfriend’s Dad was swinging him between his legs playing football, so hopefully he’ll follow in my footsteps.”
