Offensive words

I've never been one to moan about political correctness, when people moan that one has to be 'politically correct' these days what they usually mean is that they can't be racist or otherwise offensive.

But, one of the sites that I post on has just started censoring words that are deemed offensive and edited a post of mine containing the word 'cockney', because it contains the word 'cock', I'm trying to think of something to post that will contain the word 'Scunthorpe' now.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I think the world is full of nutters.

I also hope you've stopped using the word 'Afro' as that is now deemed to be a derogatory abbreviation of 'African' in the way that 'Paki' is to Pakistani.

I kid you not. That is in the guideline booklet issued to the Judiciary, they must refer to black West Indians as 'African-Carribeans', not 'Afro-Carribeans'

This crap really winds me up. As someone once said to me, no word can be offensive, only the manner of its use.

Don't know about that. '******', 'kike','paki', 'wog' etc are going to be offensive no matter how they're used.

i hear the word "******" practically everyday in south london. Young black people (can i say that or should i say "people of african decent) use it amongst themselfs in a similar way to which you might call your mate a bastard. I even hear white lads use it in conversation with their black peers. Its all about context. political correctness doesnt allow for that.

Another comment the same bloke made was that a remark is only offensive if you are offended by it - if you choose to ignore it or recognise the user for the idiot they are, then they loose the percieved power of that word or comment.

the reason is because amongst black people the 'n' word is, as someone said further up, just like us saying 'mate' to our, er, mates.

white people can't use the 'n' word because in the past it was an word used by white people as an insult to black people. Out of interest, when you used the 'n' word at your mate's son's football match, was it as an insult?


if it makes you feel better, you could always start calling alll your white mates 'honky'?

ESAT/BT here use BT's fault report scanning programme, which blocks lots of words, including anything including "tit"... so telling ESAT that their antics over your phone bill are "unconstitutional" gets your complaint blacklisted

Could start using honkey when chatting with white friends, just as black people seem to have adopted the "n" word, however shouting out "hey honkey, get your white arse over here" doesn't sound right.

I worked with a black American who kept using the "n" word in reference to himself, I complained to him that I found the word offensive, gave an explaination why and he promised not to use it in my presence. He did think it strange that a white man could find a derrogatory word about a black man offensive when being used by him but accepted that the word was a no go in the UK.

which rather illustrates my earlier comment, that a word is only offensive if you are offended by it.

Especially in this example as ****** is not a word historically used in this country - my dads generation would say "coon" and my grandads would say "darkie". Or maybe thats because use of ****** was considered too strong?

Just checking, but is "politically correct" if I call everyone who complains about "political correctness" A BUNCH OF WHINGEING f***ing CU-NTS.

Or would that offend the sensibilities of the anti-political correctness brigade? As I'm not 100% sure this language would "offend", I think I'll carry on using it.
