Whatever you do you'll have a great time. Fantastic country and road trips are the way to go.
I have driven Route 66 from Chicago to St Louis (pronounced LEWIS by the way, not LOUI) and to be honest there's not a lot of it left to see. You'll end up doing quite a bit of interstate. Seen plenty of other bits of the mother road in other states.
