This is the only option.

Make sure you have all photos and docs signed by authourised siqnatory! Same day costs about £90, if you can wait 2-3 days it,s closer to £70 if memory serves.

I always thought that if you urgently needed a passport, the only option was to stand in a queue at the passport office in London...

...[edit], it seems this is not the case!

Allowing for several hours of queuing.

There is a lot of queing involved..pick up application form from the Post office, fill them out, get them signed etc. and ring the Passport office in Victoria. they will give you a time slot (12-13.00, 13.00-1400 etc) go to the pub opposite and drink beer until your slot time and off you go.

All true, but before you head off to get pissed, make sure that every last tiny detail is correct as they will definitely notice even a single letter out of place and turn you out onto the street. Assuming you do fill it all in correctly, you will definitely get your passport on the day, it will just be six or seven hours out of your life that you won't get back.

Piece of cake compared to getting a US visa....

If you are required to attend an office make sure you go to the correct office. Failure to do so could result in you missing your appointment and your application being delayed. This office is only for urgent passport renewals. I.e. for customers who need to travel in less than two weeks.

http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-urgent-within-two-weeks.aspTravelling within two weeks
Fast Track one-week service
Premium same-day service
Conditions of these services
In this case you will need to apply in person at one of our offices, using either our Premium or Fast Track services. There is an extra charge for these services (see How much does it cost?). You need to make an appointment to apply at a Passport Office and you can do this by calling our 24-hour Passport Adviceline 0300 222 0000 (see terms and conditions).

We strongly advise that you do not book any travel arrangements until you have received your new passport.

Please note:

currently demand for appointments throughout all IPS Regions is exceptionally high, and you should therefore allow up to two weeks for your appointment date. Please note that appointments cannot be booked more than two weeks in advance.
if you make an appointment please arrive no more than 10 minutes before your appointment time. You will not be seen any earlier and your admission will be delayed until the appropriate time. This is to ensure our counters are as pleasant as possible for all our visitors.
customers should be aware that all callers to our counters might be screened on entry, to ensure the safety of our staff and other customers. Any item considered to be of a potentially dangerous nature might be removed for safe keeping before entry to our premises is allowed.
Fast Track one-week service
This service will not be available if you are applying for your first adult passport from 1 June 2007. This guarantees that your passport will be delivered by Secure Delivery within one week (not including bank and public holidays) of you bringing us your form and documents. If your signature is needed and you are not in at the time of delivery, the one week guarantee no longer applies.

Premium same-day service
This service is not available if you are applying for a first passport, a full / total name change to your existing passport, extension to a passport, or to replace a lost, stolen or damaged passport.

The Premium service is a guaranteed service whereby you deliver your application and collect your passport on the same day, provided your application is received before the cut-off times of 16:00 in London, 13:30 in Liverpool, 13:00 in Peterborough, 12:30 in Glasgow and Newport and midday in Belfast and Durham. On Saturdays the service is available to applicants with appointments before 11am.

If you want someone to collect your passport for you, they must provide evidence of their identity and a signed letter from you giving them permission to collect your passport. If the application is for a child, the person who has signed the section 9 of the form must sign the letter. We can only issue a passport if the person applying is in the UK at the time they apply.

If you are unable to attend an appointment in person a third party may submit the completed application form for you. They must provide evidence of their identity and a signed letter from you giving them permission to submit the application on your behalf. We can only issue a passport if the person applying is in the UK at the time they apply. Please be aware that if the form is not complete correctly, or the correct supporting documentation is not submitted, the application cannot be processed. Any amendments can be made only be the applicant, not the third party, a further appointment may be necessary.

Conditions of these services
The guarantees for these services apply only if your application is straightforward and if you have completed the form properly and supplied all the necessary supporting documents. If you supply incomplete information or we cannot confirm your eligibility from the documents you have given us, we may not be able to issue a passport in the expected time.

Great to hear ... as I'm the man who looks after it and appeared on a BBC Breakfast piece on the subject

Can you tell me how best to deal wit the following then?

My passport runs out next year and I've only recently noticed that the date of birth is wrong by a month ( born in Jan but passport says Feb, day and year of birth are correct) I have no idea how this happened as I've had quite a few passports  Anyway, am I best to say nothing and just fill in the applicaion form with the correct details, or should I bring the error to their attention before hand??

Thanks...if you can help

First point of call should be the passport Adviceline on 0300 22 0000. You need to inform them what's happened. What'll you be asked to do is send in your old passport and birth cert to prove they got it wrong. As your passport runs out next year, apply as a straight renewal and you'll get a 10 year 9 month passport in return.

Thanks, I figured it may have to happen like that :( Thing is I need my passport every couple of weeks and I don't want to risk them having it for too long. I think I may just "lose it" when it is close to the expiry date and arrange an appointment to get another at Victoria
