Then when it was all finally working, the rules of Scalextric dictated that your car ALWAYS somersaulted off the track at the exact point furthest from where you were sitting.

I always found you somersaulted off the track at the FIRST corner.

Scalextric, it was fun when it worked, but after 5 minutes of fun you'd have to spend half-an-hour fixing the brushes on the bottom of the cars.
Then my brothers bought me a box of second-hand track. Most of the time was spent figuring out which piece wasn't working.

My scaletrix never worked. I have bought scaletrix for my boys this Christmas. Let's hope it has improved!

Used to take what seemed like hours setting it up for my boys and then they would play with it for 1hr tops and then move onto something else... use to leave it up for a couple of days to peeve the wife

Some pretty accurate recollections on here. Aside from the tendency to leave the track way too easily you always had one controller where you could never apply the power progressively. It went from a half press of nothing and then whoosh full revs and off the track at first corner.

Flight Deck was awesome advert but seriously cack in reality. As for Mousetrap did anyone ever play it properly whereby you were meant to work your way round the board progressively constructing the trap? We just used to construct it completely from the off and too spice it up we actually put water in the tub that the man jumped into.

As for soccer games I always preferred Striker with the diving goalkeepers over subbuteo. The only issues were players snapping at the ankles and the pitch curving at the edges.

Best toy that really delivered was the board game Colditz. Hours of fun.
