O/T The Indepedent

How many people think the decision of the Independent to produce a tabloid sized edition is a good idea? I'm happy as I like to read a decent paper with proper news but can't be doing with a broadsheet. I think staying with that size is snobbishness gone mad and hope the Indie profit from their bold move. I've got no real political leanings and just want a paper that gives the news as it is and has good sport coverage as well.

At least it keeps me from buying The Sun!

I like the tabloid size. I take it that you think because the Independent has reduced it size you think people look down on you ? You are the type who likes to stand/sit and open a page and fold it or hold it up because the page is to big and say to yourself, Hey people, Yes, thats right, I'm reading the Independent times, I'm clever me.

And what is wrong in buying the sun ? It's the most popular selling paper in the Uk, You saying 80% of the population is thick ? You feel degraded in reading it ? I'll have you know it has good football write up's in it.

There's nothing wrong in buying The Sun - I've done it for a fair few years. But you have to admit it's tits, Beckham and made up football gossip. Good for a 5-10 minute flick through but not much else.

I couldn't give a toss what other people think of the paper I read. But the snobbishness I was referring to was the attitude of The Times amongst others when reacting to the Independent. I never buy any of the broadsheets because I literally can't cope with reading them. They are far too big to be practical. There is a big gap in the market for people who want to read a quality paper but haven't got a 15ft armspan and are good at Origami.

Caught the train out of brighton and had to stand for the duration of the journey to London Bridge. As I walked through a carriage to get to the toilet I noticed a chap reading the Independent times, As I walked passed him I noticed that he was read the sun newspaper inside of the Independent. How f***ing sad is that ?

SAD f***!!!!

I totally agree with you, I get the sun for 3 reasons, 1, page 3  2, dear derdrie, 3, Football.

I buy the Independent for local news and world news. Find the sun fecking boring when the likes of the Beckhams are in it day in day out. Can't believe the sun thinks the world revolves around air head and stuck up bitch.

spot on. same reason as when buying the times today for the news, i bought the news of the world for the footie reports.

i say a very good move on the independents part going tabloid size. i would say i'd most probably buy it now for the fact its a damn sight easier to read than the times.

still get the sun though for the deidries case book :clap2:

There is nothing worse than struggling with a broadsheet on the train, if the Indy is a tabloid I might buy it for train journeys. Alas I have a brain so I can't read the current tabloids.

I always thought the Independent was inferior to Telegraph and Guardian (Telegraph especially which has by far the best sports coverage). But the tabloid size has put it on my list... can't stand the Mail or the Express so it's good to have a smaller paper that's not full of crap. The Times wins by a mile on Mondays though for The Game supplement.

Totally agree regarding the Independents bold move. I quite like the Indy (although I prefer the Guardian and the Times) but it does suffer for being the smallest broadsheet because it's decent writers do tend to move on to bigger and better things.

I can't understand why The Telegraph dwarfs every other broadsheet (it sells about 3 times as many as its nearest competitior, The Times) because I don't find it that interesting.

I absolutely hate the red tops and the Daily Mail. They have a lot to answer for - pressuring successive governments into poorly thought out policies and being partly responsible for inciting a yobbish culture that at times makes me feel embarrassed to be English.

Tabloid version only available inside the M25 and major train stations I believe, which is a shame as the broadsheet version doesn't fit on my kitchen table.

I get the Indy delivered every day and it's a great paper. Today had a fantastic bit of sports writing re the rugby, if anyone wants a taster....

It's actually available in the Meridian area now. I get it from Hastings and have got it from Brighton as well.

My sentiments exactly - the Daily Mail is abhorent with some of the stuff it prints. All of it's headlines about the time of the worry about a chemical attack were shocking scaremongering. And it's covert racist remarks about asylum seekers are dreadful. I'm totally against our open door policy to anyone who wants to sponge off the state or commit terrorism but their comments are scandalous. The kind of paper bigots like FG probably read.
