Is there anyone among the NSC collective with the technical knowhow to solve my problem? I want to use part of the soundtrack from a YouTube video as a ringtone for a Nokia phone - one of the candy bar types with a miniSD card. Is it possible to rip the audio from YouTube, then edit out the bit I want and turn it into the right sort of file?

Yours in hope

Dunno about Nokia.
Motorola are superb for this kind of thing though. Just download any track you want onto your PC in the usual way, then use the Motorola software that comes with the phone and you can "chop" the part of the track you want to use for a ringtone / text alert and transfer it using the USB connection. Got an LG now, but I've kept my old Motorola phone just so I can still use it to grab anything I want off the PC, and then Bluetooth it to my new phone.

Obviously this is no help to you whatsoever though. Unless Nokia have a similar thing you can install on your PC (no idea how you'd carve it from YouTube mind, but surely if its a soundtrack you can download it from somewhere else ?)

Okay, thanks. Will Audacity be able to pick out the sound file if I've downloaded the video to my PC? If so, I'm halfway home. Sorry to be so technically lame.

Audacity can pull the audio out of some videos (I just tried it with an MPG) so if you can save the youtube video as MPEG then you should be ok.

go to vixy.net and add the youtube link, then you can get the file as an MP3. Then you'll need some software to "clip" the music file to what you want. I use Wavepad.

I use SUPER &copy

lets you convert youtube videos to just about any format, video only or audio only. Either save the video to HD or import the URL into Super for conversion.

While we're on the subject, anyone got a Sussex By The Sea ringtone for a Nokia 3210?
