I went passed it today. They still threatning to tear it down?

Yep, a pretty unimaginative overdeveloped residential proposal. Saltdean is surely best known for the Lido, would be great to have it back as a multi-functional community venue.

it has been derelict before and raised from the dead. can be done again. but unfortunately housing trumps everything these days look at saltdean butlins now dreary flats.

times change and all that, i would love to see the council fight tooth and nail to do something with it as it was originally intended. black rock and rottingdean went. what a waste for a simple lack of imagination will or love for a local landmark would be.

a green council shoukd be encouraging a healthy outdoor lifestyle notallowing building more flats for JCLs.

you can bet your bottom dollar if the lido was on marine parade brighton there would be f***ing uproar.

Council welcomes Grade II* listing for Saltdean Lido

Brighton & Hove City Council has welcomed the upgrading of Saltdean Lido from Grade II to Grade II*.

The council’s conservation team has been supporting residents to apply for the upgraded listing, which will not only offer additional protection for the seafront landmark, but open up the possibility of grant funding for the building.

Council leader Mary Mears said: “We are extremely pleased that the Secretary of State has upgraded Saltdean Lido as residents are passionate about their local landmark. The lido is one of only 27 surviving in England and one of only three beside the sea.

“It means grant assistance from either English Heritage or the Heritage Lottery that can be put towards restoration costs may become available.”

Saltdean Lido is a ‘Moderne style’ Lido of 1938 designed by RWH Jones. It has been upgraded by the Secretary of State for culture, media and sport from a grade 2 listing to grade 2*: It is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of a 1930s lido to survive anywhere in the country.

The upgrading also means that any development proposals must be of a form that preserves the character and setting of the lido.

Brighton & Hove City Council will continue to work with the leaseholder and residents to make sure the existing building is looked after and that any new proposals that come forward are line with the council’s aim of protecting the lido and for the community of Brighton & Hove.

And, additionally, from Brighton & Hove City Council website, dated 23 March 2011

"Homes scheme will never be built at Lido"

A large development of homes will never be built on the site of Saltdean Lido.

That is the strong message from Brighton & Hove council leader Mary Mears.

Councillor Mears is responding to concerns among residents at proposals by the leaseholder to build more than 100 flats on the site. No formal planning application has ever been made.

Cllr Mears points out that the council is both the freeholder of the site and the local planning authority. In either role, she says, the council would not allow any development which would damage the historic setting.

Cllr Mears said: “I want both the leaseholder and residents to forget about the idea of putting significant amounts of housing on this site. It is a complete non-starter. The council will never allow it.

“Instead, I am going to call a meeting shortly between the Save Saltdean Lido campaign, the Saltdean Community Association who sublet it, plus experts and lawyers from the council. The aim would be to see how we can protect the Lido as a listed building and make it a permanently viable attraction.

“The current leaseholder is in dispute with the council over a number of issues. He needs to understand we will not back any major development plans and he needs to negotiate about the Lido's future accordingly.”

The government recently awarded the Lido a ‘star’ listing, upgrading it from its existing Grade 2 listed status.

Cllr Mears said: “The reason we backed that star listing application was to give the building extra protection from the kinds of proposals we were hearing. As a starred building, English Heritage would also have to approve any development.”

Cllr Mears says she expects invitations to the private meeting with residents’ representatives to be sent out in the next few days.

Officials say that there are various legal complications currently barring progress with the Lido, which they cannot lawfully make public. Cllr Mears added the authority was however “continually trying to make progress over the issue behind the scenes.”

I'm not sure how much of the site the listing applies to, as I understood it it's the main Art Deco building, but not the whole complex.

The Lido has been given Grade 2 Star listing, which means it ain't going nowhere. The latest situation is that a Community Trust is being founded to take it over, and they will be applying for £12 million grant (European money) to modernise the facilities. One small issue is that the current leaseholder hasn't given up the lease yet, and needs legally 'persuading', Things had been progressing under the previous B&H administration, so locals are hoping the Greens are also as sympathetic to the cause.

yep nothing in there says this is a previously council owned pool that was flogged off but we will buy it back or make sure someone else does and make it a pool again. anything else is unacceptable shortsighted and wrong as have been so many actions or inactions over the lido.

brighton the premier lifestyle city in the uk allows an iconic swimming pool to be turned into flats for trendy dullards.

how many flats could you get out of the pavillion?

Thanks Greens :(
It is one of the last Art Deco buildings in the local area, and of course should be saved/preserved, but...

It looks like it is derelict. Why isn't it advertised as being open and run and staffed accordingly ???

Perhaps someone like Freedom Leisure could take it over and run it professionally?

Why do we, as a country, ignore/shy away from providing decent state run sports facilities, yet complain about obesity and anti-social behaviour?

For a town like Brighton & Hove with a relatively young population, our facilities available are beyond utter horseshit.

I know that the Friends of Saltdean Lido have been working with Conran Associates office in Brighton in order to draw up feasibility schemes regarding it's complete refurbishment and the inclusion of additional leisure facilities that make it practical and usable beyond it's function as a pool, and to include things like solar / ground source heating for the pool water to extend it's usage beyond only the summer months, and possibly look at the potential of an ice rink for example in the winter. All good I think.

I took the kids to the King Alfred on Sunday, and while it's a dump, it's still a great pool to enjoy - if of course you can stand the cock roaches, one of which scattered the parents watching from the dry area pool side!

May be a completely stupid idea, but is there such a thing where they could build a temporary structure to enclose the pool over the winter months so it could be opened to the public?

Tell me is there anyway they could build a temporary structure to enclose the pool over the winter months so it could be opened to the public?

why do people need swimming pools to be warm anyway.

the lido generally had far more people lying around on the lawns eating cornettos and snogging than people actually swimming.

i cannot see how with the new brightonians this could not be a go-er can you imagine how thrilled they would be to email pics back to london - its like brockwell park but without the scary people. thats how i would market it that will be my slogan.

A handsome building. I'd heard of it earlier -- but only because my son is training to be an architect, and this in the US. In those circles at least, it's well-known, as is the main building at Shoreham airport.

Follow the link above and VOTE. The Friends of the Saltdean Lido could win £5000 which I would imagine will be a massive financial boost to their campaign.

Let's not even think about the IGNoble group getting involved.
